EM America Added to EPA Vendor's List for Hurricane Katrina Cleanup

After a long campaign requesting individuals to use EM•1® Microbial Inoculant instead of bleach, the EPA has included EM America to a list of only about 60 companies in its Katrina Vendor's List.

Alto, Texas (PRWEB) January 16, 2006 -- After a long campaign requesting individuals to “Use EM•1® Microbial Inoculant instead of bleach,” the EPA has included EM America in a list of only about 60 companies to contract with for the cleanup of Hurricane Katrina.

On the eve of Hurricane Katrina, EM America was already busy contacting the government officials it had spoken with when they questioned what EM•1® was when it was being used in the tsunami aftermath. That day began a long campaign, pulling together concerned citizens and scientists around the world who wanted to see a natural alternative to toxic chemicals be used in the remediation of the Gulf Coast area hit by Hurricane Katrina.

Use EM•1® Microbial Inoculant instead of bleach

It was the result of the concerned citizens who wrote letters to their Congressmen that lead to a call from FEMA wondering how a company they had never heard of got every Congressional to write a letter to them requesting the use of Effective Microorganisms™ in New Orleans instead of Bleach. The next step was to get on the EPA Vendor’s list so engineering firms that EM America had been developing protocols with could actually procure EM•1® for extensive bioremediation projects.

EM•1® was developed by Japanese scientist, Dr. Teruo Higa, and has been in use internationally since 1982. Although relatively new to the United States, EM•1® has been used in over 120 countries for over 25 years in agriculture, waste control and a host of other applications. EM•1® competitively excludes pathogenic bacteria which are known to cause disease. Research from ARC-Onderstepoot Veterinary Institute demonstrates the ability of EM•1® to prevent the growth of these pathogenic microbes including those that cause botulism and salmonella poisoning. The use of EM•1® Microbial Inoculant on commonly-found indoor toxic molds was tested this past October at Oregon State University and proved it to be highly effective as a bioremediation product for this application as well. Recent research has also been conducted on the applications of EM•1® Microbial Inoculant for digestion of crude oil and the breakdown of dioxins in soils.

Last year, EM•1® was used extensively throughout the December 2004 Tsunami Wave Disaster in Southeast Asia to control odor from decaying bodies and to stave off the feared growth of disease-causing pathogens. It was also used by the German government after the Elbe River flood disasters of 2002 to decontaminate the standing toxic waters and to prevent mold growth in many of the buildings that were flooded. This summer in Austria, another flood was treated with EM•1® there as well. EM•1® Microbial Inoculant has been used in wastewater treatment projects in dozens of countries including Egypt, Vietnam, India, Australia, Germany, France, Italy, and a multi-organizational-governmental program to clean the Seto Inland Sea of Japan.

University and government projects around the world have demonstrated the benefits and efficacy of the Effective Microorganisms™ technology in real-world applications. EM•1® has been used to control odors, remediate toxic substances such as those found in the tannery industry, control the growth of pathogens in soils and water, in construction materials to prevent off-gassing of VOC’s and sick house syndrome, and has entered into the areas of human health with the products EM-X® and PROEM•1 Probiotic. In the City of Meridian, Texas, a recent trial with EM•1® demonstrated the effects on Phosphorus, which was reduced from 5ppm to 0.19ppm in a matter of three weeks. Additionally, all of these microbes have been studied individually in bioremediation projects around the world by organizations including the Department of Defense, Department of Energy, and the United States Military. EM•1®, however, offers a combination of these microbes used in research, therefore compounding the efficacy and benefits when implemented.

EM•1® is an organic mixture of three basic families of BioSafety Level I beneficial microbes including the following: Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus casei, Lactobacillus fermentum, Lactobacillus delbrueckii, Bacillus subtilis, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, and Rhodopseudomonas palustris. All of these microbes are used in the food processing industry and/or in waste and wastewater treatment.

EM•1® is currently listed with the Organic Materials Review Institute (OMRI) and approved without restriction for use on certified organic operations and has been listed with OMRI since 1997. The OMRI Listing means that EM•1® is allowed for operations under the USDA Organic program.
