Washington, DC (PRWEB) January 27, 2006 -- The Specialty Coffee Association of America presents the 2006 Inaugural Mid-Atlantic Regional Barista Competition, hosted by murky coffee, February 24-26, 2006 at the Washington Convention Center, 801 Mount Vernon Place, NW, Washington, DC 20001.
Held in conjunction with Coffee Fest, a coffee-industry trade show, the Mid Atlantic Regional Barista Competition will bring together baristas (coffee-bartenders) from around the region to present to a panel of judges a 15 minute, 12 drink service that is judged on taste, presentation, and technical evaluation.
The winner of the Mid Atlantic Regional Barista Competition will be automatically seeded in the semi-final round of the 2006 United States Barista Championship, held in conjunction with the 2006 Specialty Coffee Association of America Conference and Exhibition, April 7-10, 2006, in Charlotte, NC. There, a U.S. Champion will be crowned, who will in turn represent the Nation at the 2006 World Barista Championship in Bern, Switzerland, May 19-21, 2006.
Each barista has 15 minutes to prepare four espressos, four cappuccinos, and four signature drinks of their own creation. He or she is evaluated on a 1200 point scale, which is tabulated by a panel of 7 judges: a head judge, who oversees each competition round, four sensory judges, who taste the drinks and evaluate the baristas' presentation, and two technical judges who grade the baristas' technique.
As the specialty-coffee industry continues to grow around the world, the standards of coffee and coffee preparation continue to evolve. The United States Barista Championship and its regional competitions provide opportunities for the country's top baristas to be evaluated by the nation's premier experts in coffee and espresso. Past USBC Champions include Phuong Tran from Lava Java, Ridgefield, WA, Bronwen Serna from Hines Public Market Coffee, Seattle, WA, and Heather Perry, Coffee Klatch, San Dimas, CA.
