Gibbs Gives Back - Expands Model for Service and Education

Program which places academics in a social context is a recipe for success for Gibbs College students and the Livingston community.
By placing students’ academic endeavors in a larger social context, they are able to understand the opportunities that exist for individuals to make a difference in the world around them. As a result of the program’s success, it has truly become part of the Gibbs College educational experience – one that will benefit students well after they graduate and start their careers.

Livingston, NJ (PRWEB) January 31, 2006 -- Gibbs Gives Back, Gibbs College in Livingston’s community service program and the result of a joint effort between the school’s Student Council, its faculty and staff, kicked off a new year of community giving with the addition of new service opportunities for its students. The program, in which Gibbs College students spend time “giving back” to the community by donating time in local soup kitchens, animal shelters, wilderness centers and senior citizen centers, is a success story of volunteerism, community involvement and the life-long benefits of learning within a larger social context.

Gibbs Gives Back was established as part of the school’s commitment to ongoing service within the Livingston area and surrounding counties in the greater part of northern New Jersey. It kicked off its one-year grand opening with a visit from New Jersey Governor Richard Codey and the addition of new programs, the result of relationships with organizations such as Toys for Tots, The Red Cross and the Rutgers Small Business Development Center. By providing even more opportunities for students to volunteer their time and effort to give back, Gibbs Gives Back begins 2006 with a more robust volunteer base, and strengthened relationships between the school and community.

“Gibbs Gives Back is a joint effort by students and faculty at the school to put ideas about volunteerism and giving back to work, and to allow students to realize the benefits of becoming active members in their community,” said William Ehrhart, President of Gibbs College in Livingston. “By placing students’ academic endeavors in a larger social context, they are able to understand the opportunities that exist for individuals to make a difference in the world around them. As a result of the program’s success, it has truly become part of the Gibbs College educational experience – one that will benefit students well after they graduate and start their careers.”

Recently, students assembled baskets for a local soup kitchen and served food to its visitors. Other activities have included collecting toys for needy families and spending time visiting senior citizens in need of company. The program is voluntary and open to all Gibbs students who want to be involved and give to those in need in their local community. Because the program has grown in scope as Gibbs College continues to seek opportunities for service, it has become a model of giving back, and a mainstay of an education that allows students to develop not only professionally by studying for a career, but personally, as they become confident, productive members of society.
