Laila Ali To Accept First Ever WBC 'Female Boxer Of The Year' Award

Undefeated champ also to be nominated as "The Greatest Female Champion" by the WBC.

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) January 30, 2006 -- Celebrating her top-notch performance and determination, World Champion Laila Ali will accept the first ever WBC ‘Female Boxer of the Year Award’ on Tuesday, January 31 during the 2005 WBC Awards at the Xcaret Ecotourist Park in Cancun, Mexico. The award will be presented to Ali during The Night of Champions ceremony. The announcement was made by WBC president Jose Sulaiman.

“I am thrilled and honored to be presented with the WBC ‘2005 Female Boxer of the Year Award,’” said Ali. “I am looking forward to receiving the award in person and participating in the celebrations.”

Laila Ali, who is undefeated, will also be nominated as the ‘Greatest Female Champion,’ just like her father Muhammad Ali who was awarded the ‘Greatest Male Champion.’ Never in recent history have so many champions and former champions been brought together. On hand for the festivities will be three of the greatest contemporary boxing stars: Oscar de la Hoya, Erik Morales and Julio Cesar Chavez. WBC awards for 2005 will also be presented to Floyd Mayweather, Jermain Taylor, Many Pacquio, Jose Luis Castillo, Diego Corrales, Thomas Adamekz and others during the celebration of the Night of Champions.

About Laila Ali
If bloodlines mean anything, Laila Ali is not only going to the top of her sport, she is going to put on quite a show getting there. Like her legendary father, Ali has quick feet, a stiff jab and an innate self-confidence. In her pro debut in October 1999, Laila knocked out April Fowler in 31 seconds. Following the knockout, Ali struck a pose reminiscent of her father as she stood over the stunned opponent with her fist cocked and a scowl on her face. As a boxer, Laila has gone on to amass an impressive undefeated 22-0 (19 KOs) record en route to becoming a World Champion boxer with Light Heavyweight and Super Middleweight titles for the WBC, IBA, WIBA, and IWBF. What makes Laila special is the fact that her talents and appeal are not just limited to the boxing ring, but instead seem to transcend the ring. As a result of her personality and charisma, the versatile Ali is not only a force to be reckoned with in the ring, but a great force out of the ring as well.
