Warning: Passionate, Uplifting New Novel Grips the Hearts of All Who Read It
Author Robin Dobbins announces the release of his first novel, The Last Dinosaur: An Unforgettable Love Story (now available through AuthorHouse, Amazon.com, and Barnesandnoble.com).
Deer Park, TX (PRWEB) October 28, 2006 -- The Last Dinosaur is a classic tale of values and romance turned squarely on its head. Jerry Walker was cruising through life in what appeared to be a fairytale marriage complemented by an illustrious Major League Baseball career. Then, without warning, his world came crashing down around him, leaving him reeling in disillusionment and despair.
As he struggles to come to terms with the premature end of his pitching days because of an elbow injury, Jerry is blindsided by his wife, Frances, who files for divorce and gains an injunction that prevents him from having any contact with their three sons until a psychiatric examination is completed. In a desperate attempt to redefine his life, Jerry discovers his need to make a difference in the lives of troubled youth. With the help of a longtime friend, he takes a teaching and coaching job at an inner-city high school.
The new position presents its own set of challenges, however. Jerry is pitted against militant students and Bill Saddler, a ruthless, tyrannical principal with an agenda that includes depriving the already underprivileged students of the chance to have any athletic teams. Down but not out of willpower, Jerry finds a couple of unlikely allies in fellow teachers Jack Klam and Ed Hughes. Jack is a veteran teacher who had given up fighting the system until Jerry's arrival. Ed is a black man who resents having been passed over for the head baseball coaching position. Together, the trio resolves to challenge the Saddler system.
Dobbins places readers at the center of all the relationships, entanglements, controversies, tragedies and triumphs experienced by his well-developed cast of characters.
"Though the plot is multifaceted and moves quickly, The Last Dinosaur is about people," explains Dobbins. "It is a book you will want to go back and read again just to spend some more time with the characters."
Dobbins graduated from California State University at Hayward in 1972 with a bachelor's degree in political science. He later attended graduate school at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas, and says hobbies and life experiences have influenced his writing. He has been a chemical operator for 28 years and is a certified fitness trainer and rehabilitative exercise specialist. He and his wife of 38 years have three children.
