Trident Systems Inc. Awarded Follow-on Contract to Develop and Fly the World's First Mounted Foliage Penetrating Synthetic Aperture Radar for Small UAVs
Drawing on its expertise in signal processing and small electronics, Trident Systems (www.tridsys.com) is developing a FOliage PENetrating (FOPEN) radar for use aboard small UAVs. This system will support ground operations in the Global War on Terror by enabling the ability to see through darkness, bad weather and tree canopies to find threats on the ground.
Fairfax, VA (PRWEB) October 9, 2006 -- Drawing on its expertise in signal processing and small electronics, Trident Systems (www.tridsys.com) is developing a FOliage PENetrating (FOPEN) radar for use aboard small UAVs. This system will support ground operations in the Global War on Terror by enabling the ability to see through darkness, bad weather and tree canopies to find threats on the ground.
Outfitted with Trident's UAV-mounted FOPEN SAR system, ground forces will be able to look ahead to see vehicles, weapons caches, and other targets of interest without putting American forces in harm’s way.
This effort is a continuation of work begun in 2005 for a Navy customer. According to Trident founder and CEO Nick Karangelen, “There are many, many options in the small & tactical UAV marketplace. Great companies like Advanced Ceramics Research, inSitu, and others are building reliable small platforms. Now what’s needed is a range of payloads which can respond to the unique tactical situations where these UAVs are employed. FOPEN provides a capability previously available only on much larger manned aircraft.”
The work will be conducted at Trident’s Fairfax headquarters and at the company’s facility in Redlands, CA. First flight is expected in April of 2007; the product is intended for general availability in early 2008.
