The SMB Web Hosting Opportunity
Most SMBs now understand that establishing a Web presence can help them grow their revenue. That means new opportunities for the service provider community. But while many SMBs have gotten online in the past five years or so using do-it-yourself tools, most SMBs readying for their Web debut today want to outsource the creation of their Web sites entirely.

Outsourcing Revives Telco Outlook on Web Hosting
Telcos and Web hosting have had what might be described as an on-again/off-again relationship over the years. Telcos' early attraction to Web hosting was met with unfulfilled promises of buoying declining voice revenue and transforming them into IP-based businesses. Web hosting's need for constant attention also was so costly that by the summer of 2003, some of the largest telcos called the whole thing off. By 2004, however, the emerging demand among ever smaller businesses for hosted Web sites and applications started to heat things back up. And in the past two years, the momentum has continued to grow.

Beyond Hosting
For SMBs, creating and maintaining a Web presence is first and foremost for growing revenue. For many of the service providers that support them, it's all about increasing the average revenue per SMB. So it only stands to reason that Web hosting providers should offer auxiliary services to help businesses attract the largest and most qualified audiences to their portals. And that's exactly what's happening.
