Healdsburg, CA (PRWEB) October 9, 2006 -–
Tod Brilliant, the celebrity activist whose partnership with Earth Policy Institute founder Lester Brown is helping spread vital nonpartisan information about the need for sustainable social, agricultural and economic practices, will be displaying a portion of his creative output at Flying Goat Coffee/Gallery in Healdsburg, California, with an opening reception scheduled for 20. October 2006.
Brilliant specializes in Polaroid photography, utilizing components of his vast Polaroid-specific collection (one of the world’s largest). The works, which explore a wide range of subject matter including the 3rd Reich, comedian Lenny Bruce, New York City’s subway and suffering animals, consist of poster-sized giclee prints printed upon archival watercolor paper. Each piece is strictly limited to three prints and will be paired with a copy of Lester Brown’s seminal “Plan B 2.0: Rescuing a Planet Under Stress and a Civilization in Trouble.”
Brilliant’s artist statement touches upon his photographic perspective: “I rail against the commodification of art as design. The two are distinctly separate and must remain so. Art allows for a conversation between creator and viewer, and it is in the dialogue that dimensionality, context, and substance are added to the work. A designed object, no matter how beautiful, is merely an object produced for consumption and use. If there is a design voice, it is one that merely echoes the fashions, themes and moods of a given era -- far from a conversation, more resembling a sales pitch.”
Located in the heart of California’s premier vineyards, Flying Goat Coffee/Gallery is considered one of the world’s top coffee roasters, winning multitudes of awards and receiving consistently high marks from Coffee Review, the world’s leading coffee-buying guide. In addition, Flying Goat, cofounded by artist and designer Maura Harrington, is known as the area's only truly contemporary art venue, offering its space to both local and international artists.
Opening Reception details: Flying Goat Coffee/Gallery – 324 Center Street, Healdsburg, California. 7PM – 9PM. Root beer floats available upon request.
About Tod Brilliant:
Former Roshambo Winery/Gallery cofounder, current Creative Director and celebrity activist, Tod Brilliant, like many, has given time and energy to a number of nonprofit organizations and projects. Until recently, this part-time participation was enough to assuage Brilliant’s pangs of guilt. The turning point for Brilliant came earlier this year, during a presentation given by Brian Steidle, a former U.S. Marine whose photos and stories of the suffering inflicted upon the people of Sudan’s Darfur region have opened the eyes of many, including world bodies, to the Sudanese genocide. Brilliant decided to use his talents to effectively promote awareness of the dire need for the immediate and active involvement of citizens across the globe to stem the devolution of global society and the environment. Working full-time as a well-connected celebrity, Brilliant’s first post-fame project involves promoting the work of Earth Policy Institute and World Watch Institute founder Lester R. Brown.
