New, original, patriotic poems, including Veterans Day poems and poems for Memorial Day, Armed Forces Day, Flag Day, and Independence Day (4th of July) are available at poemsource.com. There is also a Veterans Day prayer at http://www.poemsource.com/patriotic-poems.html plus an I Miss You poem for those with loved ones in the military, and other general purpose patriotic poems.
"Lots of people are searching for these kinds of patriotic poems, especially Veterans Day poems that honor our men and women in the military," says poemsource.com poet Joanna Fuchs.
As with all poemsource.com pages, most the the poems on the patriotic page are rhyming poems. "People are looking for traditional rhyming poems, which are hard to find anymore," says Fuchs, "but they still want poems in that classic form, and they search for them. The rhythm and rhyme give people a unique, natural pleasure," she says.
Fuchs says she’s been writing poems since she was a little kid. "When I was about eight years old, I made greeting cards for my family and wrote my own rhymes for them," she says, and I'm still doing it. The site is almost two years old, and I just keep writing more and more poems for it."
Here's a sample Veterans Day poem from the patriotic poems page at http://www.poemsource.com:
They Did Their Share
On Veteran’s Day we honor
Soldiers who protect our nation.
For their service as our warriors,
They deserve our admiration.
Some of them were drafted;
Some were volunteers;
For some it was just yesterday;
For some it’s been many years;
In the jungle or the desert,
On land or on the sea,
They did whatever was assigned
To produce a victory.
Some came back; some didn’t.
They defended us everywhere.
Some saw combat; some rode a desk;
All of them did their share.
No matter what the duty,
For low pay and little glory,
These soldiers gave up normal lives,
For duties mundane and gory.
Let every veteran be honored;
Don’t let politics get in the way.
Without them, freedom would have died;
What they did, we can’t repay.
We owe so much to them,
Who kept us safe from terror,
So when we see a uniform,
Let’s say "thank you" to every wearer.
