AmCham Vietnam in HCM City to Donate US$ 5,000 to Relief Operations for Vietnam Typhoon Victims

According to disaster relief officials, more than 70 people in Vietnam have been confirmed dead or missing, more than 520 people injured, US$ 620 million dollars of economic losses, with 300,000 houses and nearly 100,000 hectares (247,000 acres) of crops affected by Typhoon Xangsane, which hit Central Vietnam on October 1, 2006.

Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam (PRWEB) October 11, 2006 -- AmCham HCMC will donate US$ 5,000 to Vietnam’s Red Cross to support relief operations for those affected by Typhoon Xangsane. “We are terribly saddened by the loss of life and property caused by the direct hit of this strong typhoon in Vietnam’s Central Region,” said AmCham HCMC Chairman Walter Blocker.

According to disaster relief officials, more than 70 people in Vietnam have been confirmed dead or missing, more than 520 people injured, US$ 620 million dollars of economic losses, with 300,000 houses and nearly 100,000 hectares (247,000 acres) of crops affected.

Mr. Blocker added, “AmCham and its member companies always stand ready to support the Vietnam Red Cross relief operations in response to natural disasters, such as Typhoon Xangsane in Central Vietnam, or floods in the Mekong Delta.”

Separately, the U.S. Embassy in Hanoi announced that the United States will provide urgent disaster relief to the people of Vietnam in response to humanitarian needs following the damage caused by Typhoon Xangsane.

On October 6, the U.S. Embassy Hanoi, through the U.S. Agency for International Development’s Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance, announced that it will contribute US$ 100,000 to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies for support of relief operations by the Red Cross of Vietnam. The funds will be used to purchase essential relief supplies to support those affected by the typhoon.
