Exciting October Exhibitions @ Ch'i

Ch'i Contemporary Fine Art is pleased to announce their October exhibitions by Ann Dawson and Homer Yost from October 13 - November 13, 2006, with artists' receptions on Oct. 13 & 20th from 6-8 p.m. at the gallery's home address: 293 Grand St. Williamsburg, Brooklyn, NY.

(PRWEB) October 11, 2006 -- Ch'i's October Exhibitions include "Biloxi is Baghdad" new relief sculptures by Homer Yost and "Blue Water, New Gold" paintings by Ann Dawson. Both exhibitions will open on October 13 and run through November 13, 2006. Come meet Mr. Yost on Oct 13 from 6-8 p.m. and Ms. Dawson on Oct. 20th from 6-8 p.m.

Sculpture Homer Yost has studied and created in Italy, Central America and the United States. His sculptures in fired terracotta, cast Vatican stone and bronze are found in collections throughout the United States and England. He was the artist selected to restore the freedom statue on our nation's capital. To date however, Mr. Yost sees some of his most memorial creations in the homes he assisted to rebuild in Biloxi after Hurricane Katrina devastated the area.

In his own words:
"Nine months after Hurricane Katrina swept over the Gulf Coast of Mississippi, this area looked like a war-zone. Buildings, homes, and bridges seemed as if they had been bombed, rather than storm-torn ... it occurred to me that Biloxi could just as well be Baghdad. Both cities share the same damage to lives, homes and the environment. The pain and suffering that people have to endure is the same. The sudden death and the lingering diseases the same .... In May of this year I traveled from Maryland to Biloxi to do hurricane reconstruction work. While there, I took many photographs. I decided upon returning home to make sculptures that depict both the unbelievable destruction of Katrina, and the enduring spirit of its survivors." Twenty percent of the proceeds of Mr. Yost's sculpture sales will go to aid the Biloxi survivors. Additionally, Ch'i is pleased to welcome back painter Ann Dawson with her exhibition "Blue Water, New Gold." running Oct. 13 - Nov. 13, 2006, at the gallery's Williamsburg, Brooklyn location of 293 Grand St. A public reception is scheduled for Oct. 20th from 6-8 p.m.

Ann Dawson is a non-representational painter who began life in Cape Town, South Africa, where she trained at the Alfred Krenz School of Art. She left the country, renouncing her citizenship over apartheid. After leaving, Ms. Dawson went to England where she lived and worked for four years, studying at the Chelsea School of Art then subsequently relocating to Switzerland. Ms. Dawson moved to the United States in 1974. Light became and remains her source of inspiration. Ms. Dawson studied sculpture under Paul Lucchesi of Pietrasanta, Italy and oil techniques under Karl Connolly, at the Walters Gallery in Baltimore. She was selected as one of the Austin Museum of Art’s 10 artists of 2000. Ms. Dawson's paintings are included in private collections in London, New York, Washington, Chicago, Annapolis, Salisbury, Austin, Cape Town and Johannesburg.

The exhibition "Blue Water, New Gold," being held at Ch'i from Oct. 13 - Nov. 13, 2006, evolved when Ms. Dawson read the following from a Washington Research Institute: "By 2025, water will become the most serious resource problem in the world economy, according to the Center for Strategic and International Studies, (CSIS) a Washington think tank. The problems are twofold. First, the supply of water and the demand for it are rarely in the same place. Second, an astonishingly small amount of the world’s water is actually usable ... if all the water of Earth were compressed to a single gallon, only four ounces would be fresh. Of those four ounces, only two drops would be readily accessible. Water-driven conflicts are already roiling global affairs... The potential for calamity and conflict can only intensify as water resources dwindle." Ms. Dawson's abstract water paintings, often in all the wrong colors are her attempt to relay this fear to the public.
