Robert M. Bernstein M.D., F.A.A.D., Associate Clinical Professor of Dermatology at Columbia University in New York has been chosen by Hair Transplant Forum International as their “Pioneer of the Month.” Read by medical professionals in more than 40 nations around the world, Hair Transplant Forum Intl. is the official publication of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery.

The International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS), a non-profit organization of more than 700 hair restoration doctors, publishes Hair Transplant Forum to keep the Society abreast of the most recent developments in the field of hair transplantation. Dr. Robert M. Bernstein, founder of Bernstein Medical – Center for Hair Restoration in New York, has been selected by the Forum as hair transplant “Pioneer of the Month.”

Dr. Bernstein was chosen for his contribution to the science of surgical hair restoration based on his groundbreaking procedure “Follicular Unit Transplantation.” In his seminal publications describing this procedure, Dr. Bernstein introduced a brand new method of hair restoration surgery which recognized follicular units (groups of naturally growing hair follicles) as the ideal element of tissue to be used in hair transplant procedures. This paper was instrumental in changing the way hair transplants are performed today.

In the article that honors Dr. Bernstein, Jerry E. Cooley, MD states “The term 'Follicular Unit Transplantation' (FUT) has become so firmly embedded in our consciousness that we often consider it synonymous with hair transplantation in general. Surgeons new to the field may be unaware of its origin and how the concept evolved.” He goes on to describe the evolution of the surgical technique and Dr. Bernstein’s pivotal role in what has now become the state-of-the art in hair transplantation.

Since 1995, Dr. Bernstein has authored and coauthored more than 50 papers on hair transplantation including some of the most influential research on techniques used to repair badly performed hair transplants. “In the early 80’s as a dermatologist, I saw several patients who had received hair transplants. They had the typical 'plugs' that looked like hair on a doll’s head. I became very interested in contributing something that would make a difference in the result that patients were getting. I stayed interested in surgical hair transplantation but it took about 12 more years before I felt that we could improve upon the procedure enough for me to switch from dermatology to a hair restoration practice,” Dr. Bernstein said.

Though honored as a pioneer, Dr. Bernstein is still at the forefront of hair transplant research and development. He is currently working on instrumentation to extract donor hair with minimal scarring from the donor area in the back of the scalp. Dr. Bernstein recently released details about this new surgical instrument.

Dr. Bernstein is known to the general public from his appearances on NBC’s Today Show with Matt Lauer, CBS’s The Early Show, ABC’s Good Morning America, The Discovery Channel and other nationally syndicated programs,
