Photographers Across the United States Support October “Family Portrait Month” Promotion to Benefit Operation Smile
During the month of October, photographers from across the country are joining together with the Professional Photographers of America Charities in promoting “Family Portrait Month.”
Norfolk, VA (PRWEB) October 13, 2006 -- During the month of October, photographers from across the country are joining together with the Professional Photographers of America Charities in promoting “Family Portrait Month.” This national fund-raising effort will benefit Operation Smile, a non-profit organization which treats children around the world who suffer with cleft lips, cleft palates and other facial deformities.
Participating photographers have pledged to contribute a portion of each October family portrait sale to PPA Charities, which has chosen Operation Smile as its charitable partner. According to Pennsylvania photographer Ann Monteith, Chairman of the Board of Professional Photographers of America, “October is an ideal time for families to have their portraits created, because the holiday season is just around the corner. Few gifts are appreciated as much a portraits of family members. And when families participate in Family Portrait Month, they are making it possible to truly change the lives of children who would otherwise face a lifetime of pain and rejection.” This is the second year PPA Charities has partnered with Operation Smile for “Family Portrait Month.” In 2005, PPA Charities raised more than $15,000 for Operation Smile through the promotion.
Operation Smile, Inc. (http://www.operationsmile.org) was founded in 1982 by Dr. William P. Magee Jr., a plastic surgeon, and his wife, Kathleen, a nurse and clinical social worker. Operation Smile medical volunteers repair childhood facial deformities while building public and private partnerships that advocate for sustainable healthcare systems for children and families. To date, Operation Smile has treated more than 100,000 children worldwide and currently has programs in 25 partner countries.
“Recording the faces of children and their families is what photographers do,” says Richmond, Virginia, photographer Mary Fisk-Taylor, who serves as chairman of the PPA Charities Board of Trustees, and who was instrumental in developing the Family Portrait Month promotion. “It’s hard to imagine a more appropriate charity for our members to support. And when parents participate in Family Portrait Month, it’s a wonderful way to teach children the value of reaching out to others. Even small children can understand the importance of Operation Smile’s work, and they are eager to help these needy children.”
