Online picnic basket sales are on the rise as more of us head for the beach and backyard in search of peace, quiet, and good eats.
Bill: I have champagne, caviar, marinated truffles, brilliant foie gras and half-a-dozen assorted Hungarian gypsies.
Lili: Sounds delicious.
Bill: I thought we’d go on a picnic.
Lili: At three in the morning?
Bill: It’s the best time—no ants.
In “Darling Lili,” Rock Hudson and Julie Andrews are but one couple ready to picnic anytime, anywhere. And today, more and more folks are picking up the pastime and making for the beach, the park, the forest, or backyard.
One reason behind the picnic-craze is the proliferation and convenience of online picnic basket retailers.
Since early 2006, Picnicdirect.com (http://picnicdirect.com) has seen a steady spike in sales since launching their picnic-centric web site. And it’s not just picnic baskets flying out the door. Cocktail kits, beach blankets, wine totes, and cheeseboards all seem to do amazingly well both in summer and winter. Surprisingly, The online retailer is finding that a great deal of new business is coming from bulk sale orders made by hotels, concert bowls, party planners, corporations, and resorts.
Picnicdirect.com also notes that while summer is the busiest time of year for basket sales in North America, it’s usually summer, somewhere, sometime. Picnic basket retailers are learning that the past time is an international past time and that a large majority of sales are coming from outside the United States. Picnicdirect.com plans to sell more than half of their product in 2007 to consumers and organizations outside of North America.
In 2007 we can likely expect more folks to jump on the bandwagon and hit the highway with a few goodies packed in the trunk, and a few more pounds packed on for the ride home.
