Packet Island announced today that Technology Marketing Corporation’s (TMC®) INTERNET TELEPHONY® magazine (http://www.itmag.com) has named Packet Island’s PacketSmart VoIP Lifecycle Management solution as a recipient of a 2006 INTERNET TELEPHONY Excellence Award. INTERNET TELEPHONY magazine has been a VoIP Authority since 1998™.

Packet Island’s VoIP lifecycle management solution has been designed to eliminate the need for truck rolls and expensive on-site technician time for VoIP Service Providers targeting the SMB market. The solution is based on purpose-built micro-appliances that work with a highly scalable Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) platform called PacketSmart, hosted at a Tier-1 data center. The 4”x4” micro-appliances have two Ethernet ports that allow them to be deployed in a variety of simple configurations to accommodate the vast heterogeneity of SMB networks in existence today. Once a micro-appliance is deployed within an SMB network, VoIP experts at the service provider’s head office can remotely perform a comprehensive multi-day VoIP network assessment on the SMB network without requiring any expert technicians to be onsite. After the pre-assessment, the micro-appliance is left connected to continuously monitor and report detailed metrics on all VoIP calls and ongoing data traffic in that SMB network. In this way, when transient network issues cause VoIP service quality degradation, the service provider can go back and look at the recorded data to determine the root cause of the problem.

“The SMB VoIP market has huge potential. However, one of the big challenges facing service providers chasing this multi-billion-dollar market is the fact that most SMB networks are not ready for VoIP. Even once these networks are assessed and readied for VoIP, they tend to degrade over time, as users, applications, and devices are added to them. At Packet Island, we have created the industry’s first zero truck roll VoIP lifecycle management solution that helps service providers increase customer acquisition and reduce churn by getting their hands around this tough problem” said Praveen Kumar, Co-Founder & President of Packet Island Inc.

“The editorial staff of INTERNET TELEPHONY magazine is proud to announce the winners of the second annual INTERNET TELEPHONY Excellence Awards. These companies are as varied as the products that fit under the IP telephony umbrella, but they have all achieved delivering winning solutions for their customers’ needs,” indicated Rich Tehrani, Editor-in-Chief of INTERNET TELEPHONY.

“The winners of the second annual INTERNET TELEPHONY Excellence Award are leaders in VoIP. Taking risks to advance VoIP technology and provide real solutions has earned Packet Island recognition from the editors of INTERNET TELEPHONY. The PacketSmart VoIP Lifecycle Management Solution has excelled in the VoIP/IP Telephony industry, and most importantly, its customers are willing to offer their testaments of support,” said Greg Galitzine, Editorial Director of INTERNET TELEPHONY.

Since the first issue in February of 1998, INTERNET TELEPHONY magazine has been providing unbiased views of the complicated converged communications space. INTERNET TELEPHONY offers rich content from solutions-focused editorial content to reviews on products and services from TMC Labs and Minacom. INTERNET TELEPHONY magazine has a circulation of 55,000.

The 2006 INTERNET TELEPHONY Excellence Award winners will be published in the October 2006 issue of INTERNET TELEPHONY magazine, http://www.itmag.com, or can be found directly online at http://www.tmcnet.com/awards/it-excellence-award-winners-2006.htm.
