LOOK Effects Launches Design Division, The Captain

LOOK Effects (http://www.lookfx.com) today announced its expansion into graphic design with the unveiling of its new division, The Captain. The Captain offers TV, advertising and feature film clients creative services that include the conception and production of main title sequences, show opens, logo design, film graphics and branding.

The Captain today also announced major client wins from HBO, Fox Sports and Dockers.

Heading up the division are designer/director Mason Nicoll, Executive Producer Ellen Stafford and Business Development Director Eric Todd Smith.

Details of The Captain’s client wins include:

  •     Fox Sports – Fox Sports awarded The Captain its 2006 Major League Baseball Playoffs campaign. The package includes the design and production of image spots and graphic elements for this year’s fall broadcast. Initial production design includes a live action shoot, 2&3D animation and graphic language based on the tag line, “You Can’t Script October”.
  •     HBO – HBO/Cinemax has awarded The Captain a promo campaign for the November broadcast of the Star Wars movie franchise. It will be the first time all six movies are broadcast in high-def.
  •     HBO & TBS - HBO called on The Captain to design and produce a series of spots promoting Comic Relief, a live event to be held in November to raise money for the victims of Hurricane Katrina.
  •     Dockers – Foote Cone and Belding Advertising/SF has tapped The Captain to design and produce the graphics package for the Dockers 2006 TV campaign.

Manning the helm at The Captain is Mason Nicoll. Former creative director at Digital Kitchen/LA, Nicoll is a graduate of Rhode Island School of Design. Noted for the innovative blending of live action and graphics, Nicoll has directed and designed projects for Microsoft, Nike, and HP. He was nominated for an Emmy for the main title of Mind of Married Man, created the logo for Six Feet Under and has been recognized and received numerous awards from The Art Directors Club, ID Magazine, The AICP and BDA. Nicoll’s work has appeared at the Smithsonian's Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum in NY as well as in Details and Arena magazines and the AIGA journal.

Partnering with Nicoll is Executive Producer Ellen Stafford, former executive producer at Blind and Digital Kitchen/LA. Stafford has also worked with main title designer Kyle Cooper for whom she produced the opening credit sequences for Dreamcatcher, Zathura, The New World and Bewitched. Stafford’s resume includes 15 years of advertising agency and live action experience, producing spots and projects for a variety of clients including Volkswagen and Aerosmith.

Rounding out The Captain is business development director, Eric Todd Smith. Smith joins from a seven year stint with Yu &Co where he was instrumental in building their business from the ground up. Prior to Yu & Co Smith held a variety of advertising and managerial positions at DKNY, Price Waterhouse and Mobil.
