“A Sense of Style” premieres on October 24th at 9 PM on KTVU Channel 2. Presented in High Definition, the half hour show will take viewers to the hottest event in American Fashion: New York Fashion Week.
For the second year in a row, graduates from the MFA Fashion program have been invited to show their collections at Bryant Park. The Academy of Art University is the first and only educational institution to participate in Fashion Week. Students’ collections share the same runway as such top designers as Oscar de la Renta, Diane von Furstenberg, and Michael Kors.
“A Sense of Style” follows the grueling work schedule of these top Fashion School graduates in the months and days leading up to the show. Students will find out if they make the cut and receive one of the 10 spots going to New York. You'll see the ups and downs of the design process and witness the day when they find out from the Director of the School of Fashion, Simon Ungless who will show...and who won't go! Once the selection is finally made and the designers land in New York, that’s when the fun begins! Between shopping for accessories in the garment district, and enjoying the bright lights and glamour of New York City, viewers will be caught in a whirl- wind of excitement as these young designers take their first steps into the real world of fashion design.
This diverse team of designers come from all over the world. From Uruguay to Saudi Arabia, these students went to the heart of San Francisco to study fashion. Their designs uniquely draw on a variety of cultures for inspiration. In a collaborative effort, Mari Matsumoto and Kyung Min Kim incorporated Japanese Kabuki style clothing with graphic textiles. Avani Pratap Bhansali incorporated elements of ancient civilizations and Persian art into the textures of her designs.
