Rising Number of Morbidly Obese Patients Requires US Hospitals to Purchase New Equipment

The U.S. bariatric market will generate more than $1 billion in revenues by 2010, according to a new report from Millennium Research Group.

In 2006, obesity levels in the US were notably high: 3.9% of the US population is considered morbidly obese, a much higher rate than in other geographic regions such as Europe. The US obesity rate represents a population of over 11 million people, a volume that will increase by approximately 3.0% per year over the forecast period. As a result, by 2010, nearly 13 million Americans will be morbidly obese. It is increasingly common for severely obese individuals to require treatment for various obesity-related conditions.
