Burke Brands Inc. headquartered in Miami, signed a lease today on a 5,000 SF manufacturing facility in Hillsborough, North Carolina. The company cited aggressive growth in the Mid-Atlantic region and the necessity to increase production to better serve its rapidly expanding customer base.
The Hillsborough facility will be used primarily for coffee roasting, and will allow Burke Brands to optimize the supply chain by improving manufacturing and distribution capabilities. "The plan is to open a roastery in every market across the US where we have significant market share" states Darron Burke, the company's founder. "Great coffee starts with the highest quality beans, requires small batch artisan roasting, and has to be fresh; the shorter the time from the roaster to the cup, the better the taste. Our business model is unique in the coffee industry, because as most companies grow, they purchase much larger roasters, and roast in one centralized geographic location. Though this allows them improved economies of scale, and thus higher margins, the product quality suffers. Burke Brands, on the other hand, is a quality focused company and will never sacrifice quality for higher margins. We don't need to; now more than ever coffee drinkers are demanding better quality, and they are willing to pay a few pennies more per cup."
The Café Don Pablo brand of specialty coffee was conceived almost 20 years ago when Burke met his Colombian born wife and business partner Eliana. "She brought me to Colombia to meet her family who has been involved in coffee growing and roasting for generations. On that trip I fell in love with her, her family, Latin Culture, and of course coffee. Back then most of us in the US were drinking one of the two major supermarket brands, and didn't have a clue how delicious and different high quality, fresh coffee could taste."
Burke is convinced that Café Don Pablo gourmet coffee is the best tasting coffee available. "There are a handful of roasters in the country that can produce the same level of quality, but nobody can do it better" he claims. When asked why Café Don Pablo is superior, Burke cites the company's value proposition:
Vertical integration - We manage the production of over 1,000,000 coffee plants in Colombia, SA. We also have solid relationships with farmers in most of the world's coffee growing regions. This gives us a dedicated source of supply of the finest Arabica beans on the planet.
Fact: 80% of the world's coffee production is controlled by only four large corporations. This can make it difficult for smaller companies to get the best beans. Not us though, we have a consistent supply of the highest quality coffee beans available.
Artisan roasting - We roast in small batches in a process that is half art and half science. Instead of roasting by the ton and simply turning the beans brown like our competitors, we roast in small batches by sight smell, and sound. This ensures that the natural sugars in the bean are caramelized in just the right way to bring out the optimum flavor.
Supply Chain Optimization - Besides great beans and artisan roasting, another secret to great tasting coffee is freshness. The shorter the time from the roaster to your cup, the better the coffee tastes. We accomplish maximum freshness by roasting to order, instead of on a production schedule like our competitors. We roast, package, and ship your order within 24 hours.
Expertise - Our extended family has been in coffee growing and roasting for generations. I'm confident this experience shines through in every authentic, fresh, delicious, and aromatic cup we produce.
Marketing Support - We are passionate about what we do, and are 100% committed to our distributors' and retailers' success in selling and serving our delicious coffees. We provide training and support, and the appropriate P.O.S. - from table/shelf talkers to window/wall signs, to printed air pots, etc. that help communicate our message of quality to the specialty coffee consumer.
Burke Brands strategy seems to be paying off. Café Don Pablo has received authorization for distribution from the largest food service distributor in the country, and is now being distributed by them in North Carolina. The product is also sold on the shelves of two national retail chains, and is scheduled to test market in the largest warehouse club in the country. Additionally, Burke Brands roasts for several private label customers both large and small.
