Treasure Island Goes Wireless

The City of Treasure Island recently signed a contract with Citi WiFi Networks approving the installation of a highly anticipated wireless Broadband network. When the network is up and running, everyone in town with WiFi enabled devices, like laptops and PDAs, will see the city's landing page which will display free access to the City's webpage, the Chamber of Commerce's webpage, the hotel and motel association, maps and local business listings. Local businesses will be able to advertise right on this citywide homepage.

The City of Treasure Island signed a contract with Citi WiFi Networks approving the installation of a highly anticipated wireless Broadband network. City employees, local businesses, city residents and city visitors will all benefit from the new wireless network; which provides the city with several new and economically stimulating benefits.

First off, Citi WiFi is doubling the bandwidth capacity at government facilities. This will not only double the government's speed, but allow city workers to use more applications than previously possible. Once completed, city employees and officials will be able to work anywhere within city limits providing for access to the city's private and secure network all around town.

"Our Treasure Island police will be able to have mobile data terminals in their vehicles," says Mark Santos, Information Technology Director for the city of Treasure Island. "If it wasn't for this deal we probably couldn't have afforded to do that."

"The great news is that our network is being installed at no cost to the city or its taxpayers," says Frank McCarthy, CEO of Citi WiFi.

When the network is up and running everyone in town with WiFi enabled devices, like laptops and PDAs, will see the city's landing page which will display free access to the City's webpage, the Chamber of Commerce's webpage, the hotel and motel association, maps and local business listings. Local businesses will be able to advertise right on this citywide homepage.

"Basically tourists will be able to access a free list of nearby restaurants, and entertainment," says Santos. "This is great because visitors also have the ability to access a map and find things within walking distance."

For those wishing to access the internet, subscription services will be available for hourly, daily, weekly and monthly usage. Customers are not only able to access the internet; they can also use the service for Voice over IP phone service, home monitoring solutions and other internet applications which can provide users a significant cost savings when compared to other similar services currently available.

Several hotels, motels and condominiums have already begun installing service on their property that will work seamlessly with the citywide network. Security applications, video cameras and other enhancements can be used by the property while the residents are surfing away on the web by the pool or on the beach.

Citi WiFi Networks provides commercial, residential and multi-dwelling units' voice and data internet services as well as disaster recovery communication platforms. The company recently received a letter of intent to award the contract for the wireless project in City of West Palm Beach and is a finalist with EarthLink to provide similar service in St. Petersburg, Florida.

The company was selected to install a similar wireless network in the City of Dunedin last year and has been providing high-speed services there for more than a year. The company has submitted to the city all of the plans necessary to complete the wireless network and is currently awaiting city approval. Once completed, the network will provide coverage throughout the city limits covering just over 10 square miles.
