OHAUS Corporation Seeks Applications for the Gustav Ohaus Award for Innovations in Science Teaching

The Gustav Ohaus recognizes educational innovations with the potential to improve science teaching at the primary, secondary or college levels.

Pine Brook, N.J. (PRWEB) November 1, 2006 -- The Ohaus Corporation, a leading manufacturer of balances for the education, laboratory, industrial and specialty markets worldwide, is seeking applications for the Gustav Ohaus Award for Innovations in Science Teaching. The Award, presented annually by Ohaus, recognizes educational innovations with the potential to improve science teaching at the primary, secondary or college levels.

The winner will receive $1,500, an all expenses paid trip to the National Science Teachers Association Conference on Science Education in St. Louis, and a personalized Gustav Ohaus award. The awardees' school will receive $1,000 of Ohaus product and a plaque to be displayed at the school.

The Gustav Ohaus Awards Program
For almost 40 years, Ohaus Corporation has sponsored the Gustav Ohaus Awards Program. The innovations eligible for the award may be in the form of curricula design, teaching strategies, administrative and/or organizational patterns, or laboratory utilization with emphasis on measurement activities.

Judging Criteria
The Gustav Ohaus Award Program requires adequate and informative examples that provide the following information:

 
  • Originality – is this a new idea or model, or one that has been modified?
  • Utilization – can this idea or model be implemented in other schools across the country?
  • Benefit – if implemented, does this idea or model have the capacity to improve student performance? Describe mechanisms that will provide evidence of improvement.
  • Consistent – does this work reflect the correlating grade level National Science Education Standards and AAAS Benchmark for Science Literacy?
  • Safety – have proper safety procedures been outlined and followed?

Award Submission Requirements
 
  • Submit the completed and signed application form
  • Prepare narrative not to exceed five typed, double-spaced pages. Font size should be 12 point or larger
  • May include up to five pages of single-sided supporting material, including photos
  • Sample activity utilized in this program is highly encouraged if available

Completed submissions must be received by December 15, 2006. All material must be in one envelope. Late or faxed applications will not be accepted.
