Coronary and Peripheral Plaque Modification and Thrombus Management Device Market will Grow to Almost $800 Million by 2010

Innovative New Devices Promise Improved Preventative Treatments

Waltham, Massachusetts (PRWEB) November 8, 2006 -- Millennium Research Group (MRG), the global authority on medical technology market intelligence, has completed a thorough analysis of the US plaque modification and thrombus management markets.

With millions of Americans suffering from coronary and peripheral artery disease, several manufacturers in the industry are working to meet physician demands for the most effective system to address plaque and thrombus buildup. According to the new report entitled US Markets for Plaque Modification and Thrombus Management Devices 2006, this market, which includes thrombectomy, atherectomy, chronic total occlusion, and vascular brachytherapy devices, is expected to generate almost $800 million by 2010.

Plaque and thrombus buildup along vessel walls are potentially fatal conditions known as atherosclerosis and thrombosis, respectively. This accumulation, also known as stenosis, can partially or totally obstruct blood flow to the heart. Due to the growing number of people diagnosed with and at risk for arterial disease, especially in the peripheral vessels, physicians are becoming more aware of new and emerging treatment options.

One of the most striking medical industry successes in recent years has been the launch of FoxHollow Technologies' SilverHawk plaque excision device. This innovative device enables percutaneous access to the blockage site, employing a tiny blade to shave strips of plaque from the artery wall. As the plaque is excised, it is collected in the tip of the device and then removed from the body. FoxHollow, in partnership with Merck, is committed to analyzing plaque excised with the SilverHawk, compiling data in an internal registry in hopes of developing new preventative treatments.

"Left untreated, accumulation in the peripheral arteries can lead to critical limb ischemia (CLI), placing patients at significant risk for amputation," says Tandis Mahboubi, Senior Analyst at MRG. "Given that approximately 140,000 CLI patients suffer from limb amputations each year in the US, atherectomy device makers are specifically targeting this patient population."

MRG's US Markets for Plaque Modification and Thrombus Management Devices 2006 report includes coverage of all key industry competitors including FoxHollow Technologies (FOXH), Possis Medical (POSS), Boston Scientific (BSX), Medtronic (MDT), Spectranetics (SPNC), Vascular Solutions (VASC), NOVT Corp (NOVT), Kerberos Proximal Solutions, Cordis (JNJ) (LuMend), Kensey Nash (KNSY) (Intraluminal Therapeutics), Abbott Vascular (ABT) (Guidant), Edwards Lifesciences (EW), AngioDynamics (ANG0), Arrow International (ARRO), eV3 (EVVV), Bacchus Vascular, Cook, Datascope (DSCP), and iDev.
