Landon House Productions is Recreating Civil War Experience in Reality Show Format
Landon House Production Company and Executive Producer Kevin Dolan have created a reality television and Internet show that encourages participants to re-create the Civil War while competing for a grand prize of $1 million in gold. The format of the show divides participants into Yankee and Confederate teams as they compete against each other for various prizes or privileges within the show. The first national casting call for Sabers and Roses kicks off in Los Angeles at the Lankershim Arts Center on Tuesday, November 7th, 2006 from 1 pm to 7 pm.
Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) November 4, 2006 -- On November 7th from 1pm- 7 pm, Landon House Productions will be holding a casting call at the Lankershim Arts Center in North Hollywood for a reality show called Sabers and Roses. This show was partly inspired by the popular Civil War re-enactment sites in Virginia and Maryland. Sabers and Roses will be the first national reality competition show that is based on the Civil War. Segments for the show are scheduled to be filmed in Maryland, Texas, Pennsylvania, New York and will conclude in Gettysburg.
Competitions for the Sabers and Roses contestants will be based on tasks relevant to the Civil War era. Challenges for the men include loading and firing a musket three times in one minute, firing a cannon towards a target, riding a horse into battle, marching long distances barefoot and sabotaging an enemy camp. Challenges for the women include squeezing into tight corsets, creating and sewing clothing, caring for the wounded, preparing a meal at a campfire, competitive ballroom dancing and nineteenth century etiquette.
The title of the show Sabers and Roses was inspired by a Civil War event in Frederick, Maryland. In 1862, Confederate General Stuart held a large ball themed "Sabers and Roses" to celebrate the warm welcome that he received from over one hundred residents. In 1995, the town of Frederick has proposed a celebration with the same title to commemorate the city's 250th birthday. Residents protested the celebration because of its affiliation with the Confederates. As a result the celebration was canceled. A Frederick resident has since commented that he does not understand why anyone would want to re-create the Civil War since its origins were about racism. Sabers and Roses Creator and Executive Producer Kevin Dolan believes that the controversy of the title has been settled and the origin of Sabers and Roses is about preserving American history.
Kevin Dolan is the Sabers and Roses host. He stars as a character named Johnny Reb who was born in 1843. Dolan, who is a self proclaimed Civil War buff, hopes that Sabers and Roses will both entertain and inspire young audiences to learn more about American history. Dolan comments, "What I feel I'm doing with Sabers and Roses is bringing Civil War history to a whole new generation using a popular television format."
The Sabers and Roses soundtrack will utilize rock and roll music based on actual historical events of the Civil War. Dolan comments, "We wanted to provide a soundtrack that would appeal to younger folks to hook them into the heritage, the history." Song titles include: "I Can Always Count on You to Let Me Down," "Johnny Reb," "Civil War Rock," "Confederate Money," Riding a Raid," "Southern Girls," "Ghost Ride," "Brown Sugar" and "Shadows of the South."
Casting for the Sabers and Roses reality show will begin on November 7th in Los Angeles, California. Producers are casting potential reality stars that are creative, physically fit, competitive and have an interest in history. Sabers and Roses will be broadcast on television and Internet outlets such as http://www.areacable.com.
