Venerable oddsmaker Charles Jay is beating the political trail in advance of the midterm elections in the United States, as he has posted a slew of odds for this Tuesday's "action" that are available through his fantasy sportsbook apparatus at BetCharlesJay.com (http://www.betcharlesjay.com).
Jay makes the Democrats a solid 1-to-4 favorite (-400) to win control of the House of Representatives, but favors the Republicans by -120 (bet $1.20 to win $1) to maintain control of the United States Senate - a small margin, but a margin nonetheless.
"The general thought is that four or five Republican Senate seats are in danger of being lost, but that a couple more may be tossups," says Jay. "Some of the Republicans, namely George Allen, have been holding a reasonable amount of ground, even though one disaster after another has happened in their campaigns. I think the ground forces of the GOP should be sufficient to get out enough vote to win a couple of these close races."
Jay cites Allen's Virginia senatorial race against former secretary of the Navy, James Webb, and Bob Corker's Republican senate bid against Democratic congressman Harold Ford in Tennessee as examples. In each, he has the GOP candidate as a slight favorite.
CJ uses a strong sports angle as well, so expect to see heavy attention paid to Lynn Swann, NFL Hall of Famer who is running for governor of Pennsylvania (he's a 21-point underdog, something he rarely was with the Steelers); Heath Shuler, the former Redskins quarterback who is a candidate for Congress in North Carolina (he's the favorite, laying -150), and Jim Ryun, former world record holder in the mile, who is seeking a sixth term in Congress in his native Kansas (and is a 16-point favorite over challenger Nancy Boyda).
Jay has dozens of wager offerings (for points and play money only) on races for the U.S. Senate, the House, governorships, ballot initiatives - even a local race or two. For example, he has set a price on a man named Andy Griffith, who is actually running for sheriff in Grant County, Wisconsin. Jay is giving 25/1 on Griffith's independent candidacy. Currently there are no odds set on whether Griffith might hire Barney Fife as his chief deputy if elected.
Jay, who himself is a political veteran of sorts, having won the presidential nomination of the Personal Choice Party (with ballot access in Utah) in 2004, will be hosting an election-eve special podcast, focusing on the races from a gaming angle, on Monday night. The podcast can be accessed at the Total Action Radio Network (http://www.totalactionradio.com).
