Psst…Want the Real Recipe for a More Thankful and Giving Thanksgiving? Forget "What to do with Turkey Leftovers" and Fussy Family Members and Try This "Sage" Advice
Make your Thanksgiving more thankful and more giving with these five tips from Susan Rubin, owner of Sage Seasonal Yoga in New York.
Armonk, NY (PRWEB) November 9, 2006 -- Google Thanksgiving + stress, and over 3 million hits come up…nearly as many as if you look for Thanksgiving + turkey. And a random sampling tends to focus on the same "stress-relievers" - strategies for turkey prep and dealing with recalcitrant relatives. How about some tips that will really relieve Thanksgiving and holiday-related stress?
Susan Rubin, the owner of Sage Seasonal Yoga (www.seasonalyoga.com) in Armonk, has the real "recipe" for a stress-free Thanksgiving. It is all about balance.
1) Plan a Feng Shui Thanksgiving. Feng Shui calls for the balance of the five Chinese elements in one environment. These elements play out into food and tastes and colors – pungent, sweet, sour, salty, bitter and are not all that difficult to incorporate into a traditional or non-traditional Thanksgiving feast that will add health and serenity to your family meal.
2) Befriend your Breathing. Yoga is very much about learning the proper ways to breathe and using your breath to calm your mind. Susan describes one technique, "Diaphragmatic breathing, also called belly breathing, as a simple and effective tool to calm and ground yourself and reduce anxiety."
3) Start Yoga Now. It's not the domain of celebrities and tree-huggers. Yoga, particularly Anusara Yoga, as taught by Susan Rubin at Sage, will help alleviate mental and physical stress, help your body stay strong and avoid injury as well as recover from a host of ailments.
4) Attend an ecumenical Thanksgiving service. "Many towns, including my own," continues Susan, "host these multi-denominational prayer services which encourage all faiths to attend and usually have clergy representing them as well." It helps provide a positive, spiritual component to what is often a highly charged, difficult day
5) Adopt an Attitude of Gratitude. Both the "thanks" and the "giving" are often lost at Thanksgiving. Susan and her friends have formed a new tradition that begins at Thanksgiving and lasts through the holidays. "We used to have a holiday 'girls night out' with dinner and thoughtful, often expensive gifts," she said. Newly enlightened, her group now takes the money they would have spent on the gifts and picks a different needy local charity to give to each year. "We still have the dinner to enjoy celebrating our friendship, but we feel a lot better donating the money where it's most needed," Susan added.
To help prepare for the most relaxing and enjoyable Thanksgiving you or your readers have ever experienced, Susan Rubin invites you to put the turkey in the oven Thanksgiving morning and come take an Anusara Yoga class at Sage. She challenges anyone to do that, plus the five-step recipe above, and not truly enjoy their Thanksgiving.
