San Rafael, Calif. (PRWEB) November 8, 2006 -- Parents who read with their children can inspire a love of reading that can help them do better in school and life. This November the KN Karen Neuburger® lifestyle brand is promoting children's literacy by encouraging parents to read to their children every night with the "Books at Bedtime" campaign.

"Books at Bedtime" features a special line of KN holiday pajamas that benefit First Book, an international non-profit organization that provides new books to children from families in need, as well as three reasons for parents to establish a nighttime reading routine, including:

Creating a Comfort Zone
A bedtime routine provides predictability and cooperation to help children fall asleep, stay asleep and wake up refreshed.(1)

How to make it work:
Start your family bedtime routine at the same time every night including brushing teeth, putting on comfortable, cozy pajamas and settling your child into bed. Set aside at least 10 to 15 minutes for reading with your child each night. Provide a sense of empowerment by allowing your child to select a book or books. Use this quiet time before bed as a chance to catch up on the events of the day, find out if there is anything bothering your child and let him or her know how much you love and appreciate him.

Improving Literacy Skills and Cultivating a Lifelong Love for Books
Children who read more at home are better readers and have higher math scores.(2)

How to make it work:
By reading aloud with your child consistently, you are able to identify concepts, sounds and vocabulary that he or she may be struggling with. Discuss problem areas with teachers to find out how you can help at home. When you come across a new or "difficult" word during a story, talk about the meaning, pronunciation and possible synonyms, even referring to a dictionary so your child will approach the next encounter with improved confidence. Encourage your child to practice reading with younger siblings, friends and family members.

Creating and Sharing a Family Library
Studies show that having access to a wide variety of reading materials is essential for growing your child into a strong reader. The more types of reading materials there are in the home, the higher children rate in reading proficiency.(3)

How to make it work:
Use reading at bedtime as an opportunity to try new and different types of books or magazines borrowed from a local library. Discuss what your child likes or doesn't like about them and start a book "wish list" for the next birthday celebration or shopping trip. Encourage your child to create, embellish and even write down his or her own bedtime story one night each week. Children will actually look forward to bedtime and the opportunity to "show-and-tell." Actively talk about how you can help local literacy groups, community programs and organizations like First Book provide other families with greater access to books by "recycling" your own reading materials and age-specific books as your child outgrows them.
