A native of Illinois, Robert L. Grottke began working his way through college selling Rexair vacuum cleaners, door to door. While earning a Bachelor of Science degree from Northwestern University, Grottke worked as a salesman for the Real Silk Hosiery Company. Grottke later became a Certified Public Accountant and worked for one of the Big Eight accounting and auditing firms at the time.
