25-Seven Systems Vice President Dr. Barry Blesser Publishes Definitive Work on Aural Architecture

Former MIT professor spent five years researching book called a "wide-ranging, articulate and probing investigation of how humans listen."

Boston (PRWEB) November 20, 2006 -- 25-Seven Systems is celebrating the release of a groundbreaking book by its vice president and director of engineering, Dr. Barry Blesser. Considered one of the fathers of the digital audio revolution, Dr. Blesser's "Spaces Speak, Are You Listening?" has just been published by MIT Press.

Dr. Blesser, an AES Fellow and former AES President, co-authored the book with his wife of 35 years, Dr. Linda-Ruth Salter, an independent scholar specializing in interdisciplinary studies. The book, available at www.amazon.com and other major booksellers, examines the broad question of how listeners experience space in a wide variety of applications across a diverse range of cultures. "Spaces Speak" integrates insights from dozens of professions into a readable exploration of how auditory spatial awareness has been applied to real and virtual spaces.

"Aural architecture is the unifying concept of the aural influence of space on the social, behavioral and musical activities of the inhabitants," said Dr. Blesser, a former MIT professor. "While the concept appears to be new, its roots go back to cavemen and spans the millennia across many cultures, including our modern high-tech electronic arts."

This book will especially appeal to audio, mixing and sound engineers, who all function in today's audio world as aural architects.

Leading audio professionals have praised the book. Floyd Toole, vice president of Acoustical Engineering, Harman International Industries commented: "This wide-ranging, articulate, and probing investigation of how humans listen helps us to appreciate the value of natural and constructed acoustics. It also shows that our sense of the space of sound has largely been lost in the vast library of recorded music. This book will change how you listen. Well done!"

Dr. Blesser is well-known in the audio field, having invented the first commercial digital audio reverberation system, the EMT-250. He also helped start Lexicon in the 1970s, the first digital audio product company; published numerous papers on many aspects of digital audio and holds many audio and DSP-related patents.

Dr. Blesser was an associate professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at MIT from 1969 to 1978. He remains a sought after consultant, having provided expertise in product development, engineering management, and risk engineering for over 50 companies in the United States and Europe.

As the director of engineering for 25-Seven Systems, Dr. Blesser's time compression algorithms are the core of the company's award-winning product, the Audio Time Manager.

"We're truly proud of Dr. Blesser's achievement in publishing 'Spaces Speak,'" said 25-Seven Systems president Geoff Steadman. "In our visually-oriented culture, this work promises to raise our appreciation for listening and sound as the primary means of cultural connection. It is an important read for anyone in our industry."
