NAMWOLF Asks the California Public Utilities Commission to Reconsider

The National Association of Minority and Women Owned Law Firms (NAMWOLF) would like to express concern and disappointment with the California Public Utilities Commission's decision to amend its suggested MBE and WBE goals for legal services, and allow these goals to be fulfilled by dollars spent with minority and women attorneys at majority-owned firms. Allowing legal departments to include dollars spent with majority-owned firms to achieve diversity credit is not going to encourage the formation of relationships with minority-owned and women-owned law firms.

Milwaukee, WI (PRWEB) November 30, 2006 -- The National Association of Minority and Women Owned Law Firms (NAMWOLF) would like to express concern and disappointment with the California Public Utilities Commission's decision to amend its suggested MBE and WBE goals for legal services, and allow these goals to be fulfilled by dollars spent with minority and women attorneys at majority-owned firms. Allowing legal departments to include dollars spent with majority-owned firms to achieve diversity credit is not going to encourage the formation of relationships with minority-owned and women-owned law firms.

The failure to call for minority and women participation is a core frustration in the push for the utilization of highly qualified minority and women-owned enterprises. The Commission has already demonstrated a commitment to these enterprises and to encouraging the use of minority-owned and women-owned law firms; amending the requirements would blunt the progress that the utility companies are making. NAMWOLF asks that the Commission reconsider, and leave the MBE and WBE requirements as they stand.

The National Association of Minority & Women Owned Law Firms (www.namwolf.org) was founded in June, 2001. It is a national trade association comprising a select group of minority and women-owned law firms who exhibit excellence in the legal profession. The primary aim of the organization is to advocate for the increased utilization of minority and women-owned law firms by major corporations and public entities throughout the United States.
