Australia's National Reference Laboratory Delivers World-Leading Internet Monitoring Systems for Accurate HIV Testing

Melbourne, Australia (PRWEB) November 30, 2006 -- The National Serology Reference Laboratory, Australia (NRL) assures safe, accurate HIV testing by assessing testing systems and has the results immediately available through the Internet, continuing Australia's leadership in combating HIV epidemics. Australian innovation is providing the means for best-quality HIV testing for Australia and extending it internationally.

The NRL is using new internet-based systems connecting Australian laboratories with those internationally. It is gaining information through the resulting network that ensures HIV testing is of best quality and to standards that have not been previously possible. The system ensures that defects in HIV testing can be checked immediately to ensure results are correct. When test results are not correct there can be spread of HIV. Money spent on HIV interventions and in blood transfusion services screening is wasted if HIV test quality is not pristine.

Australia's response to the HIV epidemic since it was first recognised in the 1980s, has been innovative and outstanding. One Australian initiative was to establish the NRL to assure that HIV tests used for diagnosis, for screening blood donations, and for disease monitoring were, and continue to be, of the highest possible standard. Laboratories in Australia and overseas play a vital role in the continuing fight against HIV and AIDS, both in helping manage the epidemic and ensuring safe blood supplies. Support provided to these laboratories by the NRL, to maintain and improve the accuracy of testing is also vital. Since 1985, the NRL has ensured that Australians can have confidence in the accuracy of HIV testing. The NRL has recently developed unique information technology to assist in combating the spread of HIV in Australia and overseas by constantly improving the quality of HIV testing through prompt feedback via the Internet.

On World AIDS Day, Australians should be aware that the NRL is contributing to the management of the epidemic in countries in which initiatives similar to those established in Australia were not taken. The Australian NRL ensures quality of HIV testing in laboratories world-wide. The quality of testing in many laboratories in Southeast Asia and beyond requires significant improvement. The NRL provides assistance to such laboratories as an AusAID partner, and as the only World Health Organisation Collaborating Centre for HIV AIDS in Australia. Laboratories regularly receive quality assurance samples from the NRL and NRL scientists help laboratories to deal with testing problems as soon as they are identified.
