Herndon, VA (PRWEB) December 1, 2006
Apex CoVantage, a leading provider of knowledge process outsourcing (KPO) solutions, announces the second meeting of the Apex Advisory Board for its Global Newspaper Initiative at Online Information 2006. The focus of this meeting will be to lay the foundation for the Initiative's 2007 goals in driving the preservation of the world's archival newspapers through modern digitization technology.
Foremost, the Advisory Board will map the development of a comprehensive inventory of archival newspapers in Latin America and Africa. According to board member Frank Menchaca, Senior Vice President of Thomson Gale, "The Global Newspaper Initiative's charter centers on preserving the historical newspapers that are not included in current projects, and Latin America and Africa represent regions where opportunities for success are most immediate".
The Board will also chart its involvement in the upcoming International Federation of Library Association (IFLA) newspaper conferences in Chile and South Africa. The Board hopes to award scholarships so that IFLA can translate academic papers submitted to the conference from English into Spanish. Additionally, the Board will be enlisting the help of other commercial organizations to sponsor scholarships so that librarians within Latin America may attend the conference.
The Board will also address recruitment of additional members to its ranks and begin the process of electing officers to ensure strong leadership and longevity of the Initiative.
Newspapers are considered as "the first drafts of history" and record events, many of global consequence, within the context of their local impact. The goal of the Global Newspaper Initiative is to preserve the world's historical newspapers through digitization, and in doing so, promote cultural understanding by allowing people of different ethnicities to appreciate each other's perspectives of mankind's shared history.
The Apex Advisory Board members also include Abdelaziz Abid, Director of Division de la Société de l'information for UNESCO, Edmund King, Head of British Library Newspaper Collections for British Library, James Simon, Director of International Resources for Center of Research Libraries, Hartmut Walravens, Director for Staatsbibliothek, and Peggy Glahn, Solutions Architect for Apex Publishing.
