Orientale Lumen Conference Series Brings Eastern and Western Christians Together

The Orientale Lumen series of ecumenical conferences for clergy and laity in 2007 was announced today. The Orientale Lumen conferences bring Eastern and Western Christians together to discuss and learn about their traditions, differences and areas of common ground. Scholarly presentations, liturgical services and dialogue form the core of the conference program. Registration is open to the public.

The Orientale Lumen series of ecumenical conferences for clergy and laity in 2007 was announced today. The Orientale Lumen conferences bring Eastern and Western Christians together to discuss and learn about their traditions, differences and areas of common ground. Scholarly presentations, liturgical services and dialogue form the core of the conference program. Registration is open to the public. The conferences are jointly sponsored by Eastern Christian Publications, the Society of St. John Chrysostom and the educational institution where each conference is held.

"With the active support of preeminent Church leaders -- Orthodox and Catholic -- the Orientale Lumen Conferences continue to advance dialogue at the local Church level on the importance of the liturgical, monastic, spiritual and theological traditions of the Christian East," said Jack Figel, founder and chairman of the Orientale Lumen Conferences and president of Eastern Christian Publications. "Our conferences are one of the few ecumenical gatherings open to the public and we welcome participation from clergy and laity from all traditions -- Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox and Eastern Catholic."

Orientale Lumen EuroEast II

Dates: May 7-10, 2007

Location: Marmara Hotel, Istanbul, Turkey

Theme: "Liturgical Worship of the Byzantine Church"

Speakers: Bishop Kallistos (Ware) of Diokleia, Archimandrite Robert Taft, Father Paul McPartlan - others to be announced

Orientale Lumen XI East

Dates: June 18-21, 2007

Location: Pope John Paul II Cultural Center, Washington, DC

Theme: "Iconography: Expressions of Our Faith"

Speakers: Bishop Kallistos (Ware) of Diokleia, Archimandrite Robert Taft, Father Thomas Loya - others to be announced

Orientale Lumen XI West

Dates: June 25-28, 2007

Location: University of San Diego, San Diego, CA

Theme: "Iconography: Expressions of Our Faith"

Speakers: Bishop Kallistos (Ware) of Diokleia, Archimandrite Robert Taft, Father Andrij Chirovsky - others to be announced

Each speaker will give a plenary session followed by a panel discussion and then will answer questions from the audience. All of the papers presented will be published and provided to the attendees in a proceedings book after the conference.

Previous conferences have featured presentations from Orthodox and Catholic hierarchs including His All Holiness Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople, His Beatitude, Patriarch Gregorios III of Antioch and all the East, His Eminence Archbishop Vsevolod of Scopelos, His Grace Bishop Kallistos of Diokleia, His Eminence William Cardinal Keeler, and His Eminence Walter Cardinal Kasper, head of the Vatican's Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity.
