Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) Worth Another Look, says DoctorSolve

Perspectives are changing on the once-shunned HRT as benefits outweigh cons for menopausal women.

Vancouver, B.C (PRWEB) December 5, 2006 -- New analysis of Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) reveals that HRT offers many benefits for menopausal women, including reducing the risk of coronary heart disease (CHD).

In 2002, published results from the Women's Health Initiative (WHI) and Heart Estrogen/Progestin Replacement Study (HERS) created a dramatic shift in the use of HRT for menopausal women. Only 28% of women aged 50-74 years, were taking hormone therapy after 2002, compared to 42% preceding the studies, which indicated that HRT increased the risk of cardiac events, strokes, breast cancer, hip fractures and colorectal cancers. A closer look shows that HRT treatment is in fact not as dreary as it was once believed.

"Menopause is a significant change in a woman's life," says Dr. Paul Zickler of DoctorSolve (www.doctorsolve.com) online pharmacy services. "HRT can help alleviate the annoying symptoms of menopause, such as hot flashes, mood swings, irritability, night sweats and insomnia. The beneficial effects of HRT for women between the ages of 50 - 59 outweigh the risks and provide an overall improvement in quality of life."

HRT is the administration of female hormones estrogen and progesterone to even out the declining levels of hormones as a result of the onset of menopause. There are added benefits as well. In a study conducted by Dr. Shelley R. Salpeter at Stanford University, CA, Salpeter demonstrated that women who began HRT near menopause had a 32% reduced risk of chronic heart disease, plus reduced risk of bone fractures and colon cancer.

As a complement to HRT, healthcare professionals are also promoting the use of a new progestin-coated intrauterine system (IUS), known as Mirena. Primarily used a means of birth control, the IUS may offer benefits for menopausal women. Combined with low dose estrogens, IUS delivery of progesterone may reduce the risk of breast cancer and heart disease. "In the perimenopausal woman who is still producing estrogen, Mirena reduces headaches, moodiness, weight gain and bloating," says Zickler. "It is also effective in reducing dysfunctional uterine bleeding (DUB), which is defined as prolonged, excessive, irregular or no uterine bleeding," says Zickler. "This means a significant decrease in the number of surgical procedures required to solve the problem." Mirena, available at www.doctorsolve.com, also offers safe and effective birth control for women who are nulliparous. (Women who have not had any children.)

"Information is the key to having a more positive change of life," says Zickler. "Woman going through menopause should ask their physicians about their options. They may be very surprised to learn that the products they have discounted may actually be very beneficial to them!"
