Single in the Suburbs? Suburban Singles Find There's New Economy In Speed Dating

Single in the suburbs? Singles who've moved to the suburbs to enjoy the good life are finding new economy in "suburban" speed dating. A Match Made in 7's company philosophy is that the same quality of life that suburban living offers singles can and should extend to their social life. This Central Massachusetts based speed dating business developed its matching events with suburban singles in mind holding them in suburban New England areas where many singles now live and work. By attending local speed dating events instead of ones in distant metropolitan areas, they save time and gas. At a point when they're faced with high gas prices, long commutes and minimal free time, the last thing most suburban singles need or want is to lengthen their commute. Beyond speed dating's well known social economies (meeting many potential dates in one night), this new economy that suburban speed dating offers may be an unexpected upside of the downturn in the economy.

If there's any truth to the adage, "What goes around, comes around," then we may be in for another round of speed dating. For the past fifteen years, round robin dating, more commonly know as speed dating, has enjoyed periodic spikes in popularity. Many factors are now converging to help resurrect the format.

·tRight now there are more singles in the U.S. than ever before. Many are single "again," whether by death or divorce, and are more mature, typically 35 to 55 and older.

·tA growing number of singles are happily situated in the suburbs and are searching for ways to meet other singles of their own age and with similar situations.

·tFor single commuters, travel duration and costs continue to rise.

·tMany suburban singles have work and family responsibilities that leave them little time to socialize -- especially on weeknights.

·tMany singles find personals ads phony, internet and other matchmaking services disappointing and online dating too scary. Most prefer face-to-face meetings where there can still be some element of good old-fashioned chemistry.

So it should be no surprise that speed dating has found a new home in suburbia. A Match Made in 7, based in Central Massachusetts, runs speed dating events in suburban Massachusetts communities including Auburn, Lunenburg, Milford, Sturbridge and Westborough. While currently some sites also serve suburbs in Connecticut, New Hampshire and Rhode Island, the company plans to eventually offer its Suburban Speed Dating events throughout suburban New England. Starting in 2007, their event roster will expand to include several Connecticut suburbs.

At A Match Made in 7's speed dating events, participants clamor to learn whether their match made in heaven is a match made in 7 -- minutes. Every seven minutes, participants embark on another round of face-to-face meetings (mini-dates). Daters mark their scorecards to indicate with whom they'd like to later exchange contact info. Afterwards, the company emails the particulars to "matching" parties. Plenty of time is left to socialize before, in between and after the dating rounds.

The atmosphere is upbeat and low-pressure. Those single "again" find it a non-threatening and fun way to re-enter the dating scene. And, because these singles events are held local to where they live and work, they're home at a reasonable hour even on a weeknight. Host locations are chosen for their proximity to major highways and for their "non-bar" ambiance even though alcoholic drinks are available for purchase. Company owner, Paula Pogorzelski considers these sites "first date friendly" - that is, a warm, inviting place where a couple would naturally want to meet again for their first date.
