Innovative, adaptable radiation detection and identification systems called FIND (Flexible Illicit Nuclear Detection) are now available from Berkeley Nucleonics Corporation (BNC). FIND is an advanced spectroscopic portal monitor capable of real-time detection and identification of illicit Special Nuclear Material (SNM). The commercially available FIND monitor provides the highest level of accuracy currently available for identifying suspicious materials being smuggled through checkpoints. It is the only radiation detection portal deployed that offers real time detection and identification of radioactive materials in moving vehicles.

Adaptable to multiform applications at checkpoints, wet ports, and critical infrastructure facilities, the FIND system can monitor for radioactive materials in highway-speed vehicle traffic, mail parcel facilities, bulk cargo, small water-borne vessels, and vehicles moving through roadside checkpoints. The portal can also be configured as a discreet fixed mounted detection system to monitor slow moving packages, luggage, pedestrians, or a defined area such as the lobby of a building.

FIND systems are powered by ARAM, which brings together commercially available hardware with state of the art detection algorithms from a leading DOE laboratory. Designed and manufactured by a team of engineers who specialize in remote surveillance and complex electronically controlled systems for the military, ARAM’s modular design and flexibility allows it to be easily adapted to a large number of applications. FIND is an automatic, highly sensitive spectroscopy system that uses advanced electronics and the latest in detector material to discriminate and identify the smallest levels of radiation. The unique system features of FIND provide a mobile WMD monitoring solution of unparalleled performance and sensitivity never before available in the industry. FIND’s modular system electronics and integrated high performance processor are housed in weatherproof, EMI/RFI resistant enclosures which can be securely mounted in a commercial SUV or other vehicle type allowing for unlimited mobile applications.

The FIND system is network-ready via wireless connectivity for extended reach-back support with government officials. FIND-mobile includes a touch-screen graphic interface and text message pager. Peripheral services such as email notification, local paging, and an Ethernet port allow quick connectivity to existing alarm annunciation mechanisms. Separate audio and visual alarms are provided for both Gamma and Neutron emissions through a simple Windows® based user interface. Additional vehicle lighting and sirens as well as digital video cameras integrate easily into the FIND system’s processor interface for recording alarm events and further reach-back analysis.
