Saint Agnes Medical Center Enables their Employees to Schedule their own Shifts with RES-Q® Labor Resource Management

Central California Hospital Implements Self-scheduling with RES-Q Software to Improve Communication and Give Employees More Control over their Schedules

CALABASAS, Calif. (PRWEB) December 20, 2006 -- RES-Q Healthcare Systems announced that Saint Agnes Medical Center, Fresno, Calif., has added the RES-Q Labor Resource Management Self-scheduling Module. Saint Agnes uses RES-Q Labor Resource Management, a staffing and scheduling system, to produce clinically sound, skill-matched and financially optimized staffing in efficient schedules. The optional Self-scheduling Module enables staff to view their department's schedules and then select their own shifts or propose exchanging shifts with colleagues.

"Our staff is vital to fulfilling our mission, so we want to find ways to make the work environment more satisfying. Giving employees more control over the balance between the demands of work and home is essential to job satisfaction and ultimately contributes to better quality of care," said Barbara Dahlke, R.N., M.S.N., chief nursing officer, Saint Agnes Medical Center. "Self-scheduling gives our staff much more flexibility to balance their professional and personal lives."

Founded in 1929, Saint Agnes Medical Center is a 436-bed hospital in Fresno, Calif. The Medical Center has more than 2,800 employees. Saint Agnes has utilized RES-Q Labor Resource Management for more than a decade to maximize productivity with faster scheduling, greater consistency in the application of staffing policies and scheduling rules, and reduced use of overtime and external agency staff.

Registered users sign on to the RES-Q Self-scheduling Module with their passwords and access a security-controlled console, designed to be as simple as a bank ATM interface. The console presents three options: My Personnel Record, which users can access to update basic personnel information, such as addresses and phone numbers; Schedule Requests; and Class Registration for self-registration in continuing medical education (CME).

With shift codes and descriptions specific to each department, Schedule Requests presents a grid that displays all shifts and all employees who can be scheduled. Cells within the grid are color-coded. For instance, shifts short of staff are highlighted in red. Employees can quickly view their department's schedules and click on the shifts they want to request. RES-Q Labor Resource Management applies department-specific scheduling rules (for instance, to prevent more than two employees to schedule vacations on any given day). If an employee is scheduled for a shift that they would like a colleague to work for them, they right-click on that cell in the grid. A "shift pick-up" request is automatically e-mailed to all employees in their department, and the shift changes color on the grid.

The department manager signs on to the Management View in the module to review and approve requests and finalize schedules. E-mail messages are then automatically formatted and sent to employees' work and home e-mail addresses with their schedules.

RES-Q Healthcare Systems will demonstrate its staffing and scheduling software solutions at the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) Annual Conference & Exhibition, February 25 to March 1, 2007, Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, New Orleans, La. RES-Q will be located at booth #3165.
