Why Are Most of us Obsessed with Going on Holiday by the Sea?

Even in the days when travelling was very difficult and time consuming we still loved going to the 'seaside' for our annual holidays. Probably the convenience of the sea water to throw ourselves when we got hot was the main factor to start with. Now the habit is difficult to break, and isn't there something fascinating about the point at which land stops and the sea begins?

This almost certainly applies more to those of us in Temperate climates like the UK. After an wet and windy Autumn followed by a cold, miserable Winter with nights drawing in at 4:30 in the afternoon, who can blame us for planning a holiday in the sunshine? Even in the Winter we love to walk along the beach or promenade and watch the breakers hit the beach or rocks. It is somehow hypnotic, that pattern of the rollers which form and then turn into waves; and the sounds .... my favorite is that sucking sound after the wave breaks, stops and turns back down the beach before the next one arrives.

Why do we climb to the top of hills, walk along cliff top paths, walk promenades, sit on the beach for hours? I think it is because the things we see and hear activate senses within us which do not get much exposure normally. They make the toughest of us feel the wonder of nature and you can't help knowing it can only be doing us good.
