Innovative, Fast-Track Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Medical Imaging Receives Accreditation

MGH Institute of Health Professions announces that its Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Medical Imaging has been accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT).

Boston, MA (PRWEB) December 21, 2006 -- MGH Institute of Health Professions is pleased to announce that its Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Medical Imaging has been accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT).

Launched in 2004, Medical Imaging is MGH Institute's newest academic program, and one of the fastest growing fields in health care. The US Department of Labor predicts a need for 75,000 new radiologic technologists (RT's) by 2010. In response to the critical shortage of radiologic technologists, MGH Institute of Health Professions developed its post-baccalaureate certificate with career changers in mind.

It is the first medical imaging program in the US to combine 100% online academic instruction with hands-on laboratory and clinical sessions, which occur in facilities throughout Partners HealthCare. The curriculum is built on a series of 8 - 10 week blocks of online academic study, during which students engage in vigorous online discussions with their instructors, and each other, as they meet weekly assignment deadlines. That online study becomes the preparation for the onsite laboratory and clinical rotations that follow each academic block.

Cohorts of up to fifteen students advance together through an accelerated, 17-month curriculum. The first class of radiologic technologists graduated from the post-baccalaureate medical imaging program in May 2006.

MGH Institute of Health Professions (www.mghihp.edu), an academic affiliate of Massachusetts General Hospital, is an innovative and independent graduate school that operates within the framework of Partners HealthCare System. A progressive leader in developing comprehensive models of health care education, MGH Institute prepares advanced practice professionals in the fields of nursing, physical therapy, speech-language pathology, medical imaging and clinical investigation through a distinctive combination of academic study, clinical practice and research. An average of 800 students are enrolled in post-baccalaureate degree and certificate programs, with an increasing number of courses available online. The Institute is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges.

[Editors: Our style preference is to not spell out 'MGH' on a first reference to our name, as it incorrectly implies the Institute is a department within the hospital. Alternately, we recommend, "MGH Institute of Health Professions, an academic affiliate of Massachusetts General Hospital..."
