Binge Drinking On the Rise Among Youth, Warns Alcohol Addiction Counselor

Binge drinking is fast becoming an epidemic among young people in the UK. As pubs and clubs are allowed to remain open 24 hours, excessive drinking is sanctioned if not encouraged. As a result, drinking has become second nature to young people, and before they know it, their binge drinking leads them to a life of alcohol addiction.

(PRWEB) February 6, 2006 -- In the UK, binge drinking is fast becoming an epidemic among young people. Pubs and clubs are allowed to remain open 24 hours as young people gather for the exclusive purpose of getting drunk. Crime rates and destruction of self and family are on the rise.

Phil Collins, a veteran alcohol addiction counsellor, offers a pathway out of the culture of binge drinking for young people before they become addicted to alcohol. Collins has developed a self-help booklet on how to reduce binge drinking. This booklet is based on his ten years experience with successfully treating alcohol addiction.

Binge drinking can be a stress response to painful life events, which cause grief, isolation, loneliness or depression
According to Collins’ booklet, the first step in reducing binge drinking is to become aware of how much one is drinking by actually keep a diary of alcohol consumption. Further steps in the program include:
*   Medically-based comparison of the binge drinker’s consumption to the general population
*   Setting realistic goals for incrementally reducing binge drinking
*   Counseling and motivating the binge drinker to be consistent in working towards the set goals
*   Dealing with relapse and sharing successes in reducing binge drinking with others

Collin’s step-by-step guide also suggests the reader to determine how much money is saved when binge drinking is reduced; a self-reward to the program.

"Binge drinking can be a stress response to painful life events, which cause grief, isolation, loneliness or depression," said Collins. "People, especially youth, are prone to engage in binge drinking to avoid feeling these negative emotions. As young people use binge drinking to emotionally numb themselves against this pain, they build a tolerance to alcohol, requiring an increasing amount of alcohol to become inebriated." Collins offers his program as an intervention to this cycle.

"Having tried my local Drug and Alcohol agency and not having much success, I started to go to Phil," attests an attendee of Collins’ support group. "With his 10-step program I feel that I am now finally getting somewhere and have something to focus on and aim for."
