Detroit, MI (PRWEB) February 16, 2006
The Youth Sports & Recreation Commission (Commission) will host a panel of advocates who will discuss future trends in youth development at the next quarterly meeting of the After School Forum on Wednesday, March 1, 2006, beginning at 9:00 am. The Forum will take place at Greater Grace Temple, 23500 W. Seven Mile Road, east of Telegraph, in northwest Detroit. Admission is free and attendees may pre-register at http://www.ysrc.org.
As schools begin to place more emphasis on content and standardized testing, some advocates believe that youth may not be getting the life skills needed for success. What role can community-based programs play in helping youth achieve the necessary life skills to be “ready by 21”? What does this mean for youth workers? Panelists will include:
Office of Early Childhood Education and Family Services
The After School Forum was established by the Commission, in partnership with Communities In Schools, to help community based program providers meet the increased demand for quality after-school programs. Forum members convene regularly through quarterly meetings, brown bag luncheons, and an annual conference to address pertinent program issues, as well as exchange information and learn about community resources. Launched in 2002, there are nearly 500 registered members of the After School Forum throughout the city of Detroit.
Launched in 1995, the Youth Sports and Recreation Commission is committed to supporting programs that provide positive youth development experiences for children and youth during non-school hours. The Commission serves as an intermediary organization, working with youth service providers to build capacity, create connections and provide resources that lead to the implementation of quality youth programs.
