Taking Competition to a 'Higher Level': KUA Prepares to Host 2006 Florida Lineman’s Rodeo

Twenty-four teams from more than a dozen of Florida's electric utilities will gather at Osceola Heritage Park in Kissimmee, Florida on March 18 to demonstrate the safety, skill and education of electric linemen.

KIssimmee, FL (PRWEB) March 10, 2006 –- Kissimmee Utility Authority (KUA) has begun construction of the competition field that will play host to the sixth annual Florida Lineman's Competition on Saturday, March 18 in Kissimmee, Florida.

Twenty-four teams from more than a dozen of Florida's electric utilities will gather at Osceola Heritage Park to demonstrate the safety, skill and education of electric linemen.

"Lineman rodeos offer simulations of the challenges faced by utility linemen as they work to keep electricity flowing to the customer," said KUA vice president of engineering and operations Ken Davis. "This type of event enables the linemen to test their knowledge and skills in a fun, competitive environment."

There are two levels of competition within the rodeo: journeyman and apprentice. The journeyman teams consist of three members – two climbers and a ground person. A qualified journeyman has more than four years of experience within the electric utility trade. An apprentice lineworker competes as an individual and has four or fewer years of experience.

The journeyman competition will consist of six timed events: hurtman rescue, lamp and photocell replacement and four mystery events. The apprentice competition will also include six timed events. The mystery events won’t be revealed to participants until the day before the competition.

Representing KUA in the journeyman competition are (Team #1) Aaron Haderle, Logan Murphy, David Wolfe; (Team #2) Eddie Gluc, Jeff Powell, Paul Therriault; (Team #3) Mike Fulmore, Gary Guinan, Luis Santiago. Apprentices include Dustin Kelley and Chris Ketner.

The rodeo will begin at 8 a.m. with a special flag raising ceremony followed by a military aircraft flyover. This event promises live action, music, concessions and activities for the kids. Admission and parking are free.

Founded in 1901, KUA (www.kua.com) is Florida's sixth largest community-owned utility providing electric and telecommunication services to 170,000 residents in five Central Florida counties.
