Journalist Visits Vietnam 30 Years After Reporting on Vietnam War

In her biography, trail-blazing female journalist Maggie Kilgore covered the Vietnam War for UPI and returns 30 years later to see what has changed and if progress has indeed been made.

She has also worked in management in the high-living casino industry, and has taught journalism in the States and overseas. She has flown with the Blue Angels, landed on an aircraft carrier, and spent a long day on the Goodyear Blimp–all of this from a determined and dedicated woman in a once male-dominated profession.

In her new book Remember to Laugh: Writing My Way Around the World (Palari Books, June 2006) Maggie tells about her adventures traveling around the world and covering major news stories for UPI–from the Vietnam War to interviewing presidents and dignitaries.

During more than 40 years in journalism, Margaret (Maggie) A. Kilgore worked 16 years for United Press International in Ohio, New Jersey, and Washington, D.C., where she covered Congress, the White House and the Justice Department. She is a past president of the former Women’s National Press Club in Washington. She was a foreign correspondent for the wire service during the Vietnam War from 1970-72.

In 1973, Kilgore joined the Los Angeles Times as a financial and general assignment reporter. She later worked for a decade in corporate public relations. She was the recipient of a Ford Foundation Walter Lippmann Fellowship and Knight International Press Fellowship. She also has conducted economic journalism workshops in emerging democracies for the U.S. State Department in Asia, Africa and Europe.

This summer, Maggie will be touring with her mentor and friend Helen Thomas (who has a new book out this June), and they will both discuss their adventures in the world of journalism.
