2006 Florida Lineman's Competition Opens in Kissimmee
Hosted by Kissimmee Utility Authority, the sixth annual Florida Lineman's Competition & Technical Training Workshop features training workshops for utility linemen, a rodeo competition and vendor expo.
Kissimmee, FL (PRWEB) March 17, 2006 –- The sixth annual Florida Lineman's Competition & Technical Training Workshop opened at 9 a.m. today in Kissimmee, Florida.
Hosted by Kissimmee Utility Authority, the two-day event is based at Osceola Heritage Park and features training workshops for utility linemen on Friday morning followed by a vendor expo.
On Saturday, 24 lineman teams and 24 apprentices from a dozen of Florida's electric utilities will compete in a rodeo competition to demonstrate the safety, skill and education of electric linemen. This includes teams from KUA, City of Bartow, Beaches Energy Services (Jacksonville Beach), Fort Pierce Utilities Authority, Gainesville Regional Utilities, JEA (Jacksonville), Keys Energy Services (Key West), Lakeland Electric, Ocala Electric Utility, Orlando Utilities Commission, Progress Energy and the City of Tallahassee.
There are two levels of competition within the rodeo: journeyman and apprentice. The journeyman teams consist of three members – two climbers and a ground person. A qualified journeyman has more than four years of experience within the electric utility trade. An apprentice lineworker competes as an individual and has four or fewer years of experience.
The journeyman competition will consist of six timed events: hurtman rescue, lamp and photocell replacement and four mystery events. The apprentice competition will also include six timed events. The mystery events will be revealed at a meeting of participants held this afternoon.
The competition on Saturday is free and open to the public. The event will begin at 8 a.m. with a special flag raising ceremony followed by a military aircraft flyover. This event promises live action, music, concessions and a play area for the kids.
