Bob Spengler, Save Mart Supermarkets Honored

Sacramento, California (PRWEB) March 19, 2006 -- California Independent Grocers Association’s Immediate Past Chairman of the Board Bob Spengler was honored with induction into the Hall of Achievement for the California Grocers Association’s Educational Foundation earlier this week. Bob Spengler, a food industry leader for many years recently retired as President/COO of Modesto-based Save Mart Supermarkets.

Bob thanked and acknowledged his wife Susan of 46 years and introduced attending family members, thanking them for their support throughout his career. Bob expressed his gratitude to a crowd of more than 450 food industry attendees stating “I’m honored to be in the company of the industry leaders inducted before me”. .

Bob Spengler is loved and respected by all who know him
Spengler began his grocery career at age 16, delivering milk for Golden State Dairies in Modesto. He worked for Jing Ow at National Market in Turlock, “still a thriving independent grocer today”. Bob mentored under the Pallios Bros. of Richland Markets in Ceres on his days off “learning the business from the ground up”. The Spengler’s opened their first store in 1969, in Susanville, Calif. In 1986, Bob joined the Save Mart Supermarkets team later becoming President and COO.

Addressing the group about Bob’s many accomplishments, Owner of Save Mart Supermarkets, Bob Piccinini said “Bob is a true grocery man, he knows this business”.

“Bob Spengler is loved and respected by all who know him” said California Independent Grocers Association’s Executive Director Sharon Paxton, attending the evening with fellow CIGA Board members Louis Young, Payless Markets; Steve Rodacker, Mar Val Food Stores; Del Clegg, Cookie Crock Markets; and Mike Stone, Mollie Stone’s Markets.

Bob is a Past President of the Stanislaus County Grocers Association. He was named Retailer of the Year in 1997 by the Modesto Quality Travelers Club. He has served on the Board of Directors for the Northern California Grocers Association, which is now known as California Independent Grocers Association and is currently the Immediate Past Chairman of the Board.

Headquartered in Sacramento, California, CIGA has continued to represent the Independent Retail Food Industry since the early 1900s. Today, more than 1,200 independent grocers and supplier companies make up its membership.
