Yankee, Red Sox Fans Help Boost Fantasy Baseball Teams
http://www.coolstandings.com has launched a novel type of fantasy baseball, simulating the 2006 baseball season but allowing fans to boost the performance of their favorite teams.
Boston, MA (PRWEB) March 18, 2006 -- The winner of the AL East may be determined by the click of a mouse this year. The website http://www.coolstandings.com is simulating the 2006 baseball season using 2005 statistics, and as usual the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees are competing for the top spot in their division. In this fantasy season, however, fans are able to influence the outcome of each game by boosting the offensive or defensive performance of their favorite teams.
In traditional fantasy leagues, participants select individual players to form their own teams, and as such do not share in their success with fellow participants. The idea at coolstandings.com, according to co-founders Greg Agami and Sean Walsh, is that people are more attached to their major league teams than to the individual players. By enabling fans to root for their natural teams and significantly affect their team's performance, Agami and Walsh hope to build a stronger sense of community among fantasy baseball participants.
As expected, the Yankees and Red Sox have continued their rivalry in the fantasy season, trading first place in the AL East several times during the first half of the season. Their games have attracted the most boosts from visitors to the site.
There have been several surprises - the Chicago Cubs spent much of the first half in first place, getting off to a 30-10 start, but have since stumbled into third place in the NL Central. The Philadelphia Phillies are holding on to first place in the NL East, with the New York Mets and Atlanta Braves close behind. The Kansas City Royals have gotten off to an abysmal start, losing 61 games by the simulated all-star break.
Another surprise is the distribution of boosts among fantasy baseball participants. While St. Louis is often labeled the best baseball town in America, their fans have only provided 0.7% of the total boosts at coolstandings.com (with 30 teams the average percentage is 3.3%). The Red Sox and Yankees, meanwhile, have provided 17.1% and 16.4% of the total boosts, respectively. This could be a reflection of the fans attracted by coolstandings.com, but it could also hint at differences in Internet usage by fans of various baseball cities.
So how does coolstandings.com help fans boost their teams when the real season begins?
"You still can boost your team at coolstandings," says Agami, "by buying baseball tickets online!"
