Insulin pumps are medical devices that continuously delivering insulin under the skin through a catheter. The amount of insulin delivered to the patient depends on the amount of carbohydrates the patient is eating and a correction factor to make sure the insulin level in the blood stays constant. In order to be a good candidate for an insulin pump, a patient must have the ability to manage the process…both the mechanical aspects of the pump as well as being able to correct a blood sugar problem before symptoms appear.

While insulin pumps are never needed to maintain life, insurers will likely cover these devices if it can be shown that the pump will significantly improve the ability to control diabetes above and beyond the traditional insulin therapy.
