UPS South New England District Receives Environmental Stewardship Award For Cuts in Energy Usage
UPS South New England District reduced energy usage by the amount of 41,500,000 KWH and earns award.
Hartford CT (PRWEB) April 16, 2006 -- Increased energy usage and today’s rising cost of a barrel of oil are making headlines around the world and especially in the United States. From the President’s pulpit we hear, “The nation is addicted to imported oil.” And in Connecticut, Governor Rell says she will not stand by while “energy costs damage the economy and hurt the people of Connecticut.”
The business world also is standing up and noticing, as energy usage negatively impacts both their costs and their pricing of products and services. To lower its energy usage, UPS upgraded its lighting systems throughout the South New England District, which includes Connecticut and Western Massachusetts. In recognition of those efforts, the Northeast Energy Efficiency Council—Connecticut Chapter (NEEC-CT) presented UPS the Environmental Stewardship Award.
“The lighting upgrades have been a win-win for our customers, employees and the community,” James Gray, UPS South New England District Plant Engineering Manager, said. “They have helped to reduce the overall demand for electrical energy in Connecticut and provide a step in the right direction for UPS and the environment.”
Hartford Mayor Eddie A. Perez added, “I want to thank UPS for its energy efficiency efforts. By reducing its energy usage, UPS is showing itself to be a responsible corporation that cares about our community. We are proud to have the South New England District offices in Hartford.”
UPS contracted with New England Energy Management, headquartered in Danbury CT, to retrofit the lighting systems within the District. The new systems will achieve a lifetime savings of 41,500,000 KWH, which is equivalent to saving 9,742 acres of trees or 3,482,572 gallons of gas. In presenting the award, David J. Leishman, Co-Chairman, NEEC-CT, said, “The Northeast Energy Efficiency Council—Connecticut Chapter would like to present this plaque to UPS for their participation in energy-efficiency projects funded by the Connecticut Energy Efficiency Fund, and in partnership with Connecticut Light & Power (CL&P) and United Illuminating (UI). The lifetime energy savings represent a great accomplishment.”
In accepting the award, Stefan Wilson, UPS Vice President, said, “UPS continually strives to be an involved corporate citizen in the communities we work and serve. We are grateful for the opportunity to participate in the lighting project and the ability to help create an awareness of conservation through valuable partnerships such as these.”

Companies eligible for the Environmental Stewardship Award are those that participate in the Connecticut Energy Efficiency Fund. Created to address Connecticut’s increasing energy needs—and rising costs—the Connecticut Energy Efficiency Fund (CEEF) is an initiative to help homeowners and renters, small and large businesses, and state and local governments use energy more efficiently.
