Leading Israeli Newspaper Ha'aretz Features American Author Charles Patterson and His Internationally Acclaimed Book 'Eternal Treblinka'
Ha'aretz's weekend edition recently had a long article about Charles Patterson and his controversial book Eternal Treblinka that compares what our society does to animals with what the Nazis did to their victims. Israel is the first country outside Europe to publish "Eternal Treblinka: Our Treatment of Animals and the Holocaust," a book now in seven languages.
New York, NY (PRWEB) April 25, 2006 -- The weekend edition of the Israeli newspaper Ha'aretz (Musaf) had a long article on March 31 about the recently published Hebrew edition of "Eternal Treblinka: Our Treatment of Animals and the Holocaust" by American author Charles Patterson. For the next three weeks the paper printed letters and reactions to the article, all of them supportive except one.
Israel is the first country outside Europe to translate and publish Patterson's groundbreaking book. The Hebrew translation by Oded Wolkstein is the book's sixth translation since Lantern Books published the English edition (ISBN 1-930051-99-9) four years ago. The Pardes Publishing House in Haifa, headed by David Gottesmann, is the book's Israeli publisher (ISBN 965-7171-26-1).
Two major Israeli newspapers had already written reviews of the English edition of the book soon after its publication in New York. The English edition of Ha'aretz called the book "thorough and thought-provoking," and Maariv wrote, "The moral challenge posed by Eternal Treblinka turns it into a must for anyone who seeks to delve into the universal lesson of the Holocaust."
Eternal Treblinka has already been translated and published in Germany, Italy, Poland, Croatia, and the Czech Republic, and the French publishing house of Calmann-Levy in Paris and the Spanish publishing house of Editorial Milenio in Lerida, Spain have decided to translate and publish the book as well.
The book's title comes from the Yiddish writer and Nobel Laureate, Isaac Bashevis Singer, to whom the book is dedicated. "In relation to them, all people are Nazis," he wrote, "for animals it is an eternal Treblinka." (Treblinka was the Nazi death camp north of Warsaw.)
Eternal Treblinka examines the common roots of animal and human oppression and the similarities between how the Nazis treated their victims and how modern society treats the animals it slaughters for food.
The first part of the book describes the emergence of humans as the "master species" and how we came to dominate the earth and its other inhabitants. The second part examines the industrialization of slaughter of both animals and humans in modern times, while the last part of the book profiles Jewish and German animal advocates on both sides of the Holocaust, including Isaac Bashevis Singer himself.
