HOUSTON, TX It takes ESP to develop Exemplary Science Programs (ESP). A National advisory board consisting of National Science Education Standards (NSES) and National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) leaders selected 15 exemplars from nearly 3,000 nominations for a monograph series of exemplary programs in science ( These Monographs have been produced to meet the visions of exemplary professional development programs and science in grades K–4, 5–8 and 9–12 and consists of descriptions and the research-based evidence of their effectiveness in addressing the changing emphases listed in the NSES to produce superior student learning. was selected for inclusion in Volume III of this monograph series. is a practice-based professional development program that uses it’s research-based Digital Imagery as an Instructional Mode for Student Achievement (DIIMSA) Model to improve teacher quality and increase student engagement for successful student achievement in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

Educational leaders at realize that problems in today’s schools science programs range from a lack of conceptual connections to a lack of effective teaching methods for given time constraints that all can lead to not using problem solving and inquiry to energize students and get them interested in the details of science. These leaders also realize that the majority of teachers do not respect the multiple intelligences of students and encourage each to follow his/her own path within a framework of the environment as a context for learning. The DIIMSA Model addresses these problems and helps teachers get results by using practice-based professional development that includes instructional materials, equipment and technology that can be used in any setting by any teacher as campus-based, field excursion, laboratory and case study experiences are undertaken.

Schools and Districts that have implemented the DIIMSA Model understand why the results of positive, engaging, effective, connected and worthwhile concept-based professional development experiences for teachers aid in instructional and assessment successes that transfer directly into their individual classroom methods to allow student achievement to soar. A student in a past DIIMSA Model project described the importance of capturing authentic pictures using digital cameras and authoring technology to perform dynamic authoring as: “Authoring pictures with the software taught me a lot about the parts of an animal and what they were used for. Once I gathered my information, I was able to easily put it together in my own way and learn from it by clicking and creating regions on various parts of the picture that I took.”

In August 1998 Barbara retired from her position as Manager of Science, K-12, in the Houston Independent School District, Houston, Texas. She received her B.S. in Biology/Chemistry from Prairie View A&M University, and her M.Ed. in Administration and Supervision, as well as her mid-management and supervisory certifications, from the University of Houston. She has taught at the middle school, high school and college levels.
