Marshalltown, IA (PRWEB) May 14, 2006 -- A failed quest for unique, hand-made items for her newborn daughter inspired an Iowa woman to launch her own business, Briar Patch Heirlooms. Based in Marshalltown, Iowa, the company markets a variety of heirloom-quality pieces targeted toward children of all ages.

Briar Patch Heirlooms, which operates as an Internet business (http://www.briarpatchheirlooms.com), was launched in March of this year. The site offers a broad spectrum of quality art pieces all crafted in North America by talented artisans. Visitors to the site can purchase art in media from furniture to jewelry, décor to scrapbooks. Briar Patch Heirlooms offers unique custom gifts and art for children from birth through high school graduation.

“After my daughter was born, I wanted to provide her with the best products available - from toys to decor,” said Andrea DeLara, proprietor of Briar Patch Heirlooms. Searching for something unique in a world where many items are mass-produced and imported proved disheartening. “As I looked for distinctive items, the same store-bought themes echoed in every aisle, next to identical pieces of compressed wood furniture stained different colors to make them more ‘unique.’”

“I want the items on the site to infuse lives with color, with whimsy, with culture,” said DeLara. “The pieces we sell have energy because they were created with passion.” Briar Patch Heirlooms offers items that will be treasured, not only for this year, but years – and generations – to come. “So much of our life is disposable. Briar Patch Heirlooms aims to bring exuberance, creativity and culture to its customers. We’re the rainbow-flavored ice cream with sprinkles, whipped cream and a cherry on top in a vanilla world.”

Briar Patch Heirlooms customer Elizabeth Fisher is pleased with the quality of the products. “I want to give my daughters items to grow up with – things that they will transcend the years, things that hold memories, things they will gift to their own children,” Fisher said. “Growing up, I took for granted the one-of-a-kind items my relatives made for me, and Briar Patch Heirlooms helps me bring unique items into my kids lives.”

DeLara says she hears this type of sentiment from many of her customers. “Fewer and fewer people are creating handmade heirlooms for their kids – people just don’t have the time. Briar Patch gives people access to artisan-made high-quality heirlooms.”

“I created this company because I was inspired by my daughter, Aria Grace,” said DeLara. “In turn, I wanted to provide her and other children with inspiration, happiness, warmth and joy. They say we paint our own world – and I want her to have the brightest palette of colors available.”

DeLara works with an extraordinary group of North American artisans who provide her clients with high-quality, unique items. “I look to collaborate with artists who create art that begs to be touched … art that lives and breathes and asks to be part of your family … art that you just can’t do without,” DeLara commented.

The site continues to grow. Today, it offers more than 500 items, with frequent additions as DeLara locates artisans who meet her criteria. When asked to provide ten words to describe Briar Patch Heirlooms, DeLara doesn’t hesitate: “Quality, class, charm, elegance, warmth, joy, whimsy, exuberance, energy and color. Always color.”

Just as her daughter motivated DeLara, she hopes the site will encourage others, and not just from an artistic perspective. Each quarter, the site sponsors a different children’s charity and provides a portion of the site’s net proceeds to that cause. For its first quarter of business, Briar Patch Heirlooms has selected The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
